The Hindi word ज़रिए (jarīye) is a preposition that you'll hear and see frequently. It's an important word to add to your vocabulary, especially as you move into intermediate Hindi. Simply put, ज़रिए means 'by means of' or 'through'. Think of it as indicating the method, channel, or agent by which an action is performed or something is achieved. It helps you explain *how* something happened or *how* something will be done.

You use ज़रिए when you want to specify the medium, instrument, or person involved in bringing something about. It's often used with nouns that represent communication methods, tools, or intermediaries.

Let's look at some common scenarios where ज़रिए is used:

  • Communication: When you talk about sending a message, getting information, or contacting someone, you'll often use ज़रिए to specify the mode of communication.
  • Process or Method: If you're explaining the way something was done or will be done, ज़रिए can be very useful. It points to the process or the steps taken.
  • Intermediary: Sometimes, something is achieved with the help of a person or another entity. ज़रिए can be used to indicate this intermediary.

It's important to remember that ज़रिए typically follows the noun it modifies. The noun will often be in its oblique form, especially if it's a masculine noun ending in 'a' or a plural noun. However, since ज़रिए itself is a postposition, it doesn't always directly change the case of the preceding noun in the same way other prepositions might. The context will often make it clear.

मैंने उसे ईमेल के ज़रिए खबर भेजी। (I sent him the news via email.)

Here, 'ईमेल के' (email's) is followed by ज़रिए to show the method of sending the news. Notice 'के' which functions like an English 'of' or a possessive marker, connecting 'email' to 'by means of'.

Here, 'उसकी मेहनत के' (his hard work's) is followed by ज़रिए to show that hard work was the means or reason for the completion of the work.
