The Verb Second (V2) Position
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Norwegian, the verb must always be the second element in a main clause.
- The verb is always the second element: 'Jeg spiser eple' (I eat apple).
- If you start with an adverb, the verb follows immediately: 'Nå spiser jeg' (Now eat I).
- The subject can come after the verb if the sentence starts with something else.
Meanings
The V2 rule dictates that the finite verb must occupy the second syntactic position in a declarative main clause.
Standard Declarative
Used for basic statements of fact.
“Han leser en bok.”

Adverbial Fronting
Used when emphasizing time or place at the start of a sentence.
“I morgen reiser vi.”
