Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Norwegian, the verb must always be the second element in a main clause.

  • The verb is always the second element: 'Jeg spiser eple' (I eat apple).
  • If you start with an adverb, the verb follows immediately: 'Nå spiser jeg' (Now eat I).
  • The subject can come after the verb if the sentence starts with something else.
Element 1 + Verb + Subject + Rest

Meanings

The V2 rule dictates that the finite verb must occupy the second syntactic position in a declarative main clause.

1

Standard Declarative

Used for basic statements of fact.

“Han leser en bok.”

“Vi går til skolen.”

2

Adverbial Fronting

Used when emphasizing time or place at the start of a sentence.

“I morgen reiser vi.”

“Her bor jeg.”
