Subjunctive for Hypothetical Situations
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Armenian conditional mood (պայմանական եղանակ) to express hypothetical situations that are contrary to reality.
- Use the -լու suffix on the verb stem + auxiliary verb 'լինել' (to be).
- The condition clause (if) uses the present or past subjunctive.
- The result clause uses the conditional form to show consequence.

Meanings
The subjunctive/conditional mood expresses actions that are dependent on a condition or are purely hypothetical.
Hypothetical
Situations that are not currently true but could be.
“Եթե հարուստ լինեի, աշխարհը կշրջեի։”
“Նա կգրեր այդ գիրքը, եթե ոգեշնչված լիներ։”
Polite Request
Softening a request or desire.
“Կուզենայի մի բաժակ սուրճ։”
“Կխնդրեի ձեզ լռել։”
