Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Norwegian, the verb must always be the second element in a main clause.

  • The verb is always the second element: 'I today eat' (Jeg i dag spiser).
  • If you start with time or place, the subject moves after the verb: 'Today eat I'.
  • Questions often start with the verb: 'Eat you now?'
Position 1 (Subject/Time/Place) + Verb + Position 3 (Subject/Rest)

Meanings

The V2 rule dictates that the finite verb must occupy the second syntactic position in a declarative main clause.

1

Standard Declarative

Used for normal statements where the subject is in position 1.

“Jeg leser en bok.”

“Han snakker norsk.”

2

Inverted Declarative

Used when an adverbial (time/place) starts the sentence.

“Nå leser jeg.”

“Her bor vi.”

3

Interrogative

Used for Yes/No questions.

“Snakker du norsk?”

“Er du sulten?”
