Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Replace long 'because' or 'which' clauses with gerunds, participles, or the supine to sound like a sophisticated native speaker.
- Use Gerunds for 'because/when' clauses: 'Fiind obosit...' (Being tired...) instead of 'Pentru că eram obosit...'
- Use Participles for 'which' clauses: 'Cartea citită...' (The read book...) instead of 'Cartea pe care am citit-o...'
- Use the Supine for purpose: 'Mașină de spălat' (Machine for washing) instead of 'Mașină care spală'.

heavy sentences. Usually, we take a subordinate clause and turn it into a phrase. A subordinate clause has a subject and a conjugated verb.-ând/-ind), the participle (-at/-it), and the supine (de + participle). For example, instead of saying Because I knew the truth, you say
Knowing the truth. You lose the conjunction pentru că and the pronoun eu.Because I have worked here for five years, I know the system.Or, you could say
Having worked here for five years, I know the system. The second one sounds much more confident. It shows you have control over the language. You are not just translating from English.

dangling modifiers. Make sure the action still belongs to the right person. If you say Walking home, the rain started,it sounds like the rain has legs!

De luat la pachet instead of I would like this so that I can take it home.

dangling gerund. This happens when the subject of the gerund isn't the same as the main subject. For example: Fiind bolnav, doctorul m-a consultat. This sounds like the doctor was sick, not you! Always check that the subject matches. Another mistake is overusing the word care. Learners often create train sentences with care... care... care. It is exhausting to listen to. Break those trains! Use a participle instead. Don't forget that some verbs don't like being gerunds. Verbs of state like a fi or a avea are okay, but don't force weird verbs into that mold. Finally, watch out for the supine. It always needs the preposition de. Saying Am mult citit is wrong; it must be Am mult de citit.مقایسه با الگوهای مشابه
pentru că (because). The short way uses the gerund.Pentru că nu avea bani, a rămas acasă vs. Neavând bani, a rămas acasă. The second one is punchier.Omul care citește (The man who reads) vs. Omul citind (The reading man).citind is less common here than in English, the participle Omul pasionat (The passionate man) is much better than Omul care este pasionat. Another contrast is the infinitive vs. the să clause.Vreau să plec is standard, but Doresc a pleca is the formal, concise alternative. It feels like wearing a tuxedo instead of a t-shirt.سؤالات رایج
Is the gerund always better?
No, only use it when the cause or time is clear.
Can I use this in text messages?
Yes, especially the supine like De făcut! (To do!).
Does this make me sound like a snob?
Not if you use it naturally. It makes you sound educated.
Is it hard to learn?
It takes practice, but it's like riding a bike. Once you get the balance, you'll fly.

نکات فرهنگی
Romanians value 'vorba lungă, sărăcia omului' (long talk, man's poverty), yet paradoxically love long sentences. Concise expression is seen as a sign of high education.
Often uses more archaic concise forms or Russian-influenced nominalizations in formal contexts.
Speech is slower, but the use of the supine and participle is very precise and frequent.
Romanian non-finite forms derive from Latin. The gerund comes from the Latin 'gerundium', and the supine is a unique Balkan development from the Latin 'supinum'.

No, that's a grammatical error called 'anacolut'. The subject of the gerund must be the same as the main verb's subject.
No. The infinitive is `a face`, the supine is `de făcut`. The supine usually describes the purpose or nature of an object.
Not at all! In fact, informal Romanian is highly elliptical (concise) to save time, while formal Romanian uses nominalization to sound professional.
It's using two words that mean the same thing, like `a urca sus`. It's a common mistake to avoid in concise speech.
Add the prefix `ne-` directly to the gerund: `neștiind`, `nemergând`.
It's a unique feature of the language that allows for very efficient descriptions of tools and tasks.
Only if the 'care' clause is passive or describes a state. If it's an active action, you usually need the full clause.
In context, yes! It's a perfect example of an elliptical sentence where the verb and subject are understood.
In Other Languages
Gerundio (-ando/-iendo)
Romanian doesn't use the gerund for the continuous 'to be' (a fi + gerunziu is rare/archaic).
Gérondif (en + participe présent)
Romanian gerunds never take 'en' or any preposition.
Partizip I / Nominalisierung
Word order in participial phrases is much more flexible in Romanian.
Te-form (〜て)
Japanese Te-form is grammatically mandatory for chaining; Romanian gerund is a stylistic choice.
Masdar (مصدر)
Arabic Masdar is much more central to basic grammar than Romanian nominalization.
Contextual Ellipsis / Particle 'de' (的)
Chinese conciseness comes from lack of grammar; Romanian conciseness comes from complex grammar.
