00:00

- [Narrator] Remember when you used to draw animals as a kid

00:03

using whatever coloured crayons you had to hand?

00:05

You probably created ridiculous things

00:08

like purple polar bears, bright-yellow parrots,

00:10

white lions and pink grasshoppers,

00:13

but what if I told you all those things aren't as made-up

00:16

as you might think?

00:18

The animal kingdom is far more colourful than you know,

00:21

and coming up are some of the world's rarest creatures

00:24

that definitely won the genetic lottery.

00:27

(bright upbeat music)

00:32

Melanistic Fox.

00:33

When you think of the world's most beautiful wild animals,

00:36

foxes probably don't spring to mind,

00:39

but have you ever seen one like this before?

00:42

This is the incredibly rare

00:43

and majestic cross fox,

00:46

which was once abundant in America

00:48

until they were largely killed off

00:50

in the late 19th century

00:51

thanks to high demand for their unique fur.

00:54

Cross foxes are almost identical to red foxes,

00:57

but they have a larger, bushier tail

01:00

with more wool under their feet.

01:02

The cross fox was given its name

01:04

thanks to the long, dark stripe running down its back,

01:07

intersecting another stripe

01:08

to form a cross over the shoulders.

01:11

Their incredibly unique coat

01:13

is the result of a partially-melanistic variant.

01:16

Melanistic is basically the opposite of albinism,

01:19

meaning that an abundance of dark-coloured pigment

01:22

is produced under the skin.

01:23

Although melanistic foxes make up about 30%

01:27

of the Canadian fox population,

01:29

they're still a very rare sight to see,

01:31

but there's an even more elusive kind;

01:34

the silver fox.

01:35

These mysterious foxes

01:37

are a fully melanistic version of the cross fox

01:40

created through years of breeding.

01:42

As you can see,

01:43

they have a glossy black undercoat with a topcoat

01:46

that looks like they've been dusted with silver,

01:49

as well as some white colouring on the tip of their tails!

01:52

One thing's for sure:

01:53

you'd be incredibly lucky to see one of these foxes

01:56

raiding your bins!

02:00

King Cheetah.

02:01

Notice anything out of the ordinary about this cheetah?

02:04

Take a closer look at that magnificent coat

02:07

when compared with its run-of-the-mill counterpart,

02:09

and you'll see what makes the so-called king cheetah

02:12

so well sought-after.

02:14

This stunning big cat is a variety of the regular cheetah

02:18

with a rare mutation that produces cream-coloured fur

02:21

with large, blotchy spots

02:23

and three distinctive dark, wide stripes

02:26

extending from the neck down to the tail.

02:29

At first,

02:30

it was thought to be a different species altogether,

02:32

before it was discovered that the fur pattern

02:34

was actually caused by a recessive gene

02:37

that promotes the over-production of melanin in the skin.

02:40

Back in 1926,

02:41

Major A. Cooper shot a king cheetah

02:44

and noticed how the fur was thicker and darker than normal,

02:48

so he named it after himself.

02:50

Image, you kill an animal and then name it after yourself,

02:53

that's some nerve!

02:54

Thankfully, an English zoologist wasn't impressed

02:57

and renamed the animal 'Acinonyx Rex'.

03:00

'Rex' translates as 'king' in Latin,

03:02

and the King Cheetah was born!

03:04

This elusive big cat is actually one of the rarest animals

03:08

in the world.

03:09

There are only about 30 or 50 in the entire world.

03:12

As few as 10 of those are thought to exist in the wild,

03:15

while the others are in protected parks

03:18

and wildlife reservations.

03:19

You know, when the king cheetah's heard how rare they were,

03:22

they started to get depressed.

03:24

Now they can be found moping around

03:26

rather than standing proud and regal.

03:28

But you can help them get their mojo back

03:30

for the low, low cost of hitting those 'like'

03:33

and 'subscribe' buttons.

03:34

Go on, show them you care!

03:35

Oh, and don't forget about that little bell icon

03:38

so you don't miss out on more amazing content!

03:42

Pink Katydid.

03:44

This pretty pink insect is a katydid,

03:46

which are related to grasshoppers and crickets

03:48

and mostly found in the tropics like the Amazon Rainforest.

03:52

Usually, katydids are green,

03:54

but these awesome pink variants

03:56

were first described back in 1874!

03:59

Since then, there has been intense discussion

04:02

over the origins of their dazzling hue.

04:04

At the turn of the 20th century,

04:07

Harvard entomologist Hubbard Scudder

04:09

suggested that the pink colouring could be seasonal,

04:12

meaning the normally-green insect

04:14

would change colors with the Autumn leaves

04:16

as the temperature drops.

04:18

But this theory was debunked

04:20

when myrmecologist William Morton Wheeler

04:22

found bright-pink katydid nymphs

04:24

in the prairies of Wisconsin and Illinois

04:27

during the summer season of July 1907.

04:30

Finally, the truth was revealed.

04:32

These pimped-out bugs suffer from a genetic mutation

04:35

controlled by recessive genes which is known as erythrism.

04:39

This causes an absence of normal green pigment

04:42

and/or excessive production of a red or pink pigment
