§ Forgetting 'कि' when connecting clauses

One of the most common mistakes English speakers make is forgetting to use 'कि' (ki) when connecting two clauses. In English, we often just put a comma or nothing at all, but in Hindi, 'कि' acts like 'that' to introduce the second part of the sentence, especially after verbs like 'say,' 'think,' 'know,' or 'believe.'

मैं जानता हूँ कि तुम आ रहे हो। (Main jaanta hoon ki tum aa rahe ho.) - I know that you are coming.

If you said "मैं जानता हूँ तुम आ रहे हो।" (Main jaanta hoon tum aa rahe ho.), it would sound incomplete or grammatically incorrect to a native speaker. Always remember 'कि' here.

§ Confusing 'कि' with 'क्या'

Another common pitfall is confusing 'कि' with 'क्या' (kyaa). While 'क्या' is used for asking questions (meaning 'what' or indicating a yes/no question), 'कि' is for connecting clauses and doesn't carry a question meaning.

Incorrect usage:
मैंने पूछा क्या तुम ठीक हो। (Maine poocha kyaa tum theek ho.) - This would literally translate to "I asked what you are fine." or "I asked, are you fine?".
Correct usage:
मैंने पूछा कि तुम ठीक हो। (Maine poocha ki tum theek ho.) - I asked that if you are fine. (Or simply: I asked if you are fine.)

When reporting what someone said or thought, even if it was a question, you still use 'कि'. The question marker 'क्या' would typically be inside the reported speech if it was part of the original question, but 'कि' still connects the reporting clause to the reported clause.

उसने कहा कि वह घर जा रहा है। (Usne kaha ki vah ghar jaa raha hai.) - He said that he is going home.

§ Overusing 'कि'

While it's important to use 'कि' where needed, sometimes learners overuse it in situations where it's not required, especially after conjunctions that already connect clauses directly.

  • Don't use 'कि' after 'और' (aur - and).
  • Don't use 'कि' after 'या' (yaa - or).
Incorrect usage:
मैं आया कि और वह चला गया। (Main aaya ki aur vah chala gaya.)
Correct usage:
मैं आया और वह चला गया। (Main aaya aur vah chala gaya.) - I came and he left.

The conjunctions 'और' and 'या' already perform the connecting function themselves.

§ Not using 'कि' with indirect commands/requests

When reporting commands or requests indirectly, 'कि' is often used. English might use 'to' (e.g., 'He asked me to go'), but Hindi typically uses 'कि' followed by a clause.

उसने मुझसे कहा कि मैं जाऊँ। (Usne mujhse kaha ki main jaaoon.) - He told me that I should go. (Or: He asked me to go.)

Omitting 'कि' in these constructions will make your Hindi sound unnatural.
