Bengali uses flexible word order and specific particles to signal what is 'new' versus 'old' information in a conversation.
- Move the most important 'new' information to the position immediately before the verb for focus.
- Use the particle '-ই' (i) to emphasize a specific word as the exclusive focus of the sentence.
- Use 'তো' (to) to mark information that you assume the listener already knows or should acknowledge.

Meanings
The management of information flow involves organizing sentences so that the 'Topic' (what we are talking about) and the 'Focus' (the new or important information) are clearly distinguished to ensure smooth communication.
Topicalization
Moving an object or adverb to the beginning of the sentence to make it the theme of the discussion.
“এই বইটা আমি কাল পড়েছি। (This book, I read yesterday.)”
“কলকাতায় আমি অনেকবার গিয়েছি। (To Kolkata, I have gone many times.)”
Emphatic Focus
Using the enclitic '-ই' to highlight a specific element as the only relevant one in the context.
“আমিই যাব। (I [and no one else] will go.)”
“সে আজই আসবে। (He will come today [specifically today].)”
Shared Knowledge (Thematicity)
Using 'তো' to signal that the information is already known to the participants or is a logical consequence.
“আমি তো আগেই বলেছি। (I already told you [as you should know].)”
“তুমি তো জানো ও কেমন। (You know how he is [shared knowledge].)”

Shared Ground
Pre-verbal is Key
Smart Tips
Sprinkle 'to' after your subjects to acknowledge that you and the listener are on the same page.
Start your sentence with 'Asle' (Actually) to signal a clarification is coming.
Use the '-i' particle on the object and move it to the very beginning.
Keep the main character as the topic by starting every sentence with them (or a pronoun referring to them).
발음
Focus Stress
The word before the verb or the word with '-ই' receives a higher pitch and slightly longer vowel duration.
The 'to' Particle
The particle 'to' is usually unstressed and pronounced quickly, almost like a suffix.
Rising-Falling
তুমি যাবে তো? (Tu-mi ja-be TO?)
Seeking confirmation or 'right?'
암기하기
기억법
Remember 'VIP': Verb's Immediate Predecessor is the Focus.
시각적 연상
Imagine a spotlight on a stage. The stage is the sentence, and the spotlight always shines brightest on the word standing right next to the Verb (the director).
Rhyme
Before the verb, the focus stays; with '-ই' and 'তো', you'll find the ways!
Story
A king (Subject) and a queen (Object) are in a palace (Sentence). Usually, the king leads. But when the queen wants to be the 'Topic,' she moves to the front gate. When they want to 'Focus' on a gift, they place it right next to the throne (Verb).
Word Web
챌린지
Write 5 sentences about your day, but move the Object to the beginning of every sentence to practice topicalization.
문화 노트
Speakers often use 'to' very frequently to establish rapport and shared ground.
The use of 'na' as a discourse marker alongside 'to' is very common for softening requests.
In older literature, information flow was managed with more rigid verb-final structures and fewer colloquial particles.
Bengali's flexible word order and focus particles are inherited from Sanskrit (Prakrit), but have evolved unique pragmatic functions in the Indo-Aryan family.

자주 묻는 질문 (8)
Yes! If you say `আমি যাবই` (I will definitely go), it emphasizes the certainty of the action itself.
`আমিই` is more emphatic and native-sounding, while `শুধু আমি` is more literal. Often they are used together: `শুধু আমিই`.
Mostly, but it can also be used to soften a request or express a slight contradiction (e.g., `আমি তো জানি না` - 'But I don't know').
Formal writing tends to be more strictly SOV, but topicalization (moving the object to the front) is still used for clarity in complex arguments.
Think about what the 'new' information is. Put that word immediately before the verb.
Rarely. It usually follows the word it modifies or the subject. Starting with 'To' is more common in Hindi than in Bengali.
No. `Ebong` joins two sentences or nouns, while `-ও` means 'also' or 'too'.
Because Bengali is a 'Topic-Prominent' language. We like to establish what we are talking about before we say what happened.

Cleft sentences (It is...) and Pitch Accent

Particles 'wa' and 'ga'
Japanese has a dedicated topic marker; Bengali uses sentence-initial position.
V2 Word Order and Modal Particles
German has a strict V2 rule, while Bengali is more flexible with the verb's position.
Subject-Verb Inversion
Spanish uses word order shifts more than dedicated focus particles.
Nominal vs Verbal Sentences
Arabic focus is often tied to the verb-initial vs noun-initial distinction.
Topic-Comment Structure
Chinese lacks the rich system of enclitic focus particles found in Bengali.
