Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the Imperfective aspect (несвършен вид) for any action that happens more than once, regardless of whether it was completed each time.

  • Always use Imperfective with frequency adverbs like 'винаги' (always) or 'често' (often).
  • Repeated actions in the past require the Imperfective aspect, even if they feel like 'finished' events.
  • Look for the -ва- suffix; it often signals a verb used for repeated actions (e.g., купувам).
🔄 + Imperfective Verb (несвършен вид) = Habitual Action

Almost never in standard grammar. It sounds like you are finishing a task before it even begins. Stick to Imperfective.

It doesn't matter. In Bulgarian, the *fact of repetition* overrides the *fact of completion*. Use Imperfective.

Look for suffixes like `-ва-`, `-ава-`, or `-ява-`. Also, Imperfective verbs are often longer than their Perfective partners.

Yes, because 'never' describes a repeated state of non-action.

Yes! The Imperfective aspect in Bulgarian covers both habits ('I do') and ongoing actions ('I am doing').

Yes, 'sometimes' implies a frequency, so you must use the Imperfective aspect.

Not exactly. Aspect is the *type* of verb, while Tense is *when* it happens. You use Imperfective verbs in the Present tense for current habits, and in the Imperfect tense for past habits.

Because English uses the same verb form ('I buy') for both a general fact and a specific future intent in some contexts, whereas Bulgarian forces a choice.
