The word 'дружина' (druzhina) is historically significant. It referred to the loyal retinue of a Bulgarian Tsar or a band of 'haiduti' (rebels) fighting for freedom. Using it in a proverb gives the act of teamwork a heroic, almost legendary quality. The 'tla' (communal help) was a social contract. If you didn't help your neighbor lift their 'mountain', nobody would help you with yours. This created a very tight-knit, though sometimes intrusive, community structure. Many Bulgarian startups use this proverb in their 'About Us' pages or as office wall art to bridge the gap between traditional values and modern tech culture. Bulgarian children often perform a play or read a story called 'The Turnip' (Дядовата ряпа), which is a literal illustration of this proverb—everyone from the grandpa to the mouse has to pull together to lift the giant vegetable.
