Reflexive Verbs: Actions Done to Oneself
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Reflexive verbs show an action performed by the subject upon themselves, usually identified by the suffix '-վել' in the infinitive.
- Use reflexive verbs when the subject and object are the same: 'Ես լվացվում եմ' (I wash myself).
- Many reflexive verbs are derived from transitive verbs by adding '-վել': 'լվանալ' (to wash) becomes 'լվացվել' (to wash oneself).
- Reflexive verbs in Armenian are always intransitive and do not take a direct object.

Meanings
Reflexive verbs indicate that the subject of the sentence is also the recipient of the action. They are essential for describing daily routines and self-care.
Direct Reflexive
Action performed directly on the subject's own body.
“Նա սանրվում է։ (She combs her hair.)”
“Ես լվացվում եմ։ (I wash myself.)”
Reciprocal
Actions performed between two or more people.
“Նրանք գրկախառնվեցին։ (They hugged each other.)”
“Մենք հանդիպեցինք։ (We met each other.)”
Passive/Spontaneous
Actions happening to the subject without a clear agent.
“Դուռը բացվեց։ (The door opened.)”
