When you play a board game, like chess or checkers, you use small objects to move around the board. In French, we call these small objects des pions.
Imagine you're playing a game of Ludo. Each of your playing pieces is un pion. If you're playing chess, the pawns are also called des pions.
So, a pion is simply a game piece that you move on a board.
