(rock skipping)

00:07

- What is the scientifically proven best way to skip a rock?

00:11

This is kinda hard to figure out

00:12

because every rock you throw is a little different,

00:14

not to mention your throwing motion

00:15

might accidentally vary in between throws.

00:18

And so, to solve that,

00:19

I built a perfect rock-skipping robot

00:20

with my nieces and nephews.

00:21

So today I'm gonna show you

00:22

how we used what we learned from the perfect robot

00:25

to improve their throws on average from 3 to 13 skips.

00:29

Let's get started.

00:36

(upbeat music)

00:37

This is Lake Cavanaugh.

00:38

It's located here in Washington State.

00:43

I came here every summer

00:44

for a few weeks as a kid growing up,

00:46

and my memory of it is just this magical place

00:48

to be outdoors and to be with family,

00:51

but to also discover my independence.

00:54

(upbeat music)

00:58

And of course, to find a way to compete in anything.

01:02

(children laughing)

01:05

Including rock skipping.

01:08

And this was my first time back in 15 years,

01:10

So to commemorate that,

01:12

I wanted to build something really cool.

01:14

So we took a clay pigeon thrower

01:15

and tweaked the spring and machined an adapter plate,

01:19

and then made some custom throwing arms from wood.

01:21

Then we created a base for stability.

01:23

And now all that was left was to challenge my nieces

01:25

and nephews to a rock skipping contest.

01:27

Only I might have neglected to tell them about my creation.

01:30

Actually, forget this. - I knew it.

01:34

(crowd laughing)

01:36

- [Mark] You guys ready?

01:37

- [Crowd] Three, two, one.

01:42

(Mark yelling)

01:44

- So it actually wasn't that impressive

01:46

right out of the gate, but that was intentional

01:48

because for this video,
