Everything around you feels unfamiliar. This is a reality of a newborn baby.

では、生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんにとって、どんな感じなのでしょうか？私のような哲学者であり心理学者にとって、これは魅力的な問いです。

So what is it like to be a newborn? For a philosopher and a psychologist like me, this is a fascinating question.

大人の心の中で何が起こっているのかを知ることさえ、十分に難しいことです。

It is hard enough to know what's going on in adults' minds.

生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんの心の中では、何が起こっているのでしょうか？

What could be going on in a newborn baby's mind?

赤ちゃんに意識はあるのでしょうか？自分の心と世界についての主観的な経験です。

Do babies have consciousness? The subjective experience of their mind and the world.

大人にとって、意識とは、見たり、聞いたり、考えたりする経験、そして痛み、喜び、感情の感覚を含みます。

In adults, consciousness involves experiences of seeing, hearing and thinking, and feelings of pain, pleasure and emotions.

赤ちゃんもこの経験や感情を持っていて、内なる世界を照らしているのでしょうか？

Do babies also have this experience and feelings that light up their inner world?

だから、伝統的な見方では、新生児は圧倒的な混沌の受動的な観察者であり、意識がないかもしれない、ということです。

So the traditional view is that newborns are passive observers of overwhelming chaos, and they may not be conscious at all.

今日では信じがたい話ですが、50年前、医師たちは、新生児の未熟な脳は痛みを感じられないと確信していたため、麻酔なしで割礼を日常的に行っていました。

It sounds unbelievable today, but 50 years ago, doctors routinely performed circumcision without anaesthetic, convinced that newborns' immature brain could not feel pain.

Since then, developmental psychologists have shown that infants' abilities are much more complex than we thought before.
