Using 'dya' is a sign of 'Sanskriti' (culture). Even children are taught to use 'dya' with elders from a very young age. In Pune, the 'standard' Marathi is spoken. Politeness is often very precise, and 'Te dya' is the absolute minimum requirement for public interaction. In rural areas, 'dya' might be pronounced slightly differently, but the respect remains. It is often paired with 'bhau' (brother) or 'taai' (sister). In modern Marathi offices, 'Te dya' is used even between colleagues of similar rank to maintain professional decorum.
