Duration Adverbs
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
To express duration in Thai, place the time period after the verb or the object of the sentence.
- Place duration after the verb: 'I sleep for 8 hours' -> 'ฉันนอน 8 ชั่วโมง'
- Use 'นาน' (naan) for 'a long time' at the end of the sentence.
- Use 'กี่' (gii) to ask 'how long' (e.g., 'กี่ชั่วโมง' - how many hours?).
Meanings
These adverbs specify the length of time an action continues or exists.
Action Duration
How long an action lasts.
“เขาวิ่ง 30 นาที”
“ฉันรอคุณ 1 ชั่วโมง”
State Duration
How long a state persists.
“ฝนตกทั้งวัน”
“เขาสบายดี 2 วันแล้ว”
Interrogative Duration
Asking for the length of time.
“คุณจะอยู่กี่วัน”
