In the highlands, heavy rain often comes with hail (beredò). It is common to see people running for cover under corrugated iron roofs, which make a deafening sound during 'kebad zinab'. Heavy rain is the primary cause of 'traffic' (tira-fik) in the capital. A 10-minute drive can turn into an hour. People often use this as a socially acceptable excuse for any delay. The 'Kiremt' season is celebrated in songs and poems. While heavy rain can be destructive, it is also seen as the earth being 'washed' and 'reborn'. Rainy afternoons are the peak time for the traditional coffee ceremony. The smell of frankincense mixed with the smell of wet earth (petrichor) is a quintessential Ethiopian sensory experience.
