§ Don't confuse 'به صرفه' with 'ارزان' (cheap)

Many learners, and even some native speakers, mistakenly use 'به صرفه' and 'ارزان' interchangeably. While something 'به صرفه' can sometimes be 'ارزان', the two words have different core meanings. 'ارزان' simply means low in price. 'به صرفه' implies good value for money, time, or effort, even if the initial cost isn't the absolute lowest. It focuses on the benefit you get in relation to what you put in.

DEFINITION: به صرفه (be sarfeh): economical; offering good value in terms of money, time, or effort.

DEFINITION: ارزان (arzaan): cheap; low in price.

این ماشین خیلی به صرفه است چون مصرف سوخت کمی دارد. (This car is very economical because it has low fuel consumption.)

Here, the car might not be the cheapest to buy, but its low fuel consumption makes it economical over time.

این پیراهن ارزان بود، ولی کیفیت خوبی نداشت. (This shirt was cheap, but it didn't have good quality.)

Here, it was cheap, but not necessarily 'به صرفه' if it falls apart quickly.

§ Using 'به صرفه' for people or emotions

'به صرفه' is typically used for things, services, or actions that involve a measurable expenditure of money, time, or effort. It doesn't apply to people or abstract emotional states. You wouldn't say someone is 'به صرفه' or that a feeling is 'به صرفه'. This might seem obvious, but sometimes learners try to translate directly from English phrases where 'worthwhile' might apply to a person or experience in a more abstract sense.

Incorrect: دوستی با او به صرفه نیست. (Friendship with him is not economical.)
Correct: دوستی با او خوب نیست / سودی ندارد. (Friendship with him is not good / has no benefit.)

The idea of 'worth' in a relationship is not expressed with 'به صرفه'.

§ Misplacing 'به صرفه' in a sentence structure

'به صرفه' is an adjective and usually comes after the noun it describes, or functions as a predicate adjective with a verb like 'بودن' (to be) or 'شدن' (to become). Placing it incorrectly can make your sentence sound unnatural or confusing.

Incorrect: یک به صرفه سفر. (An economical trip.)
Correct: یک سفر به صرفه. (An economical trip.)

It functions like other adjectives in Persian, generally following the noun.

خرید آنلاین همیشه به صرفه نیست. (Online shopping is not always economical.)

Here, it acts as a predicate adjective describing 'خرید آنلاین' (online shopping).
