The character 講 (gang) is also used in the word 화해(和解)하다's opposite, 강구(講究)하다, but more commonly in words like 강연 (speech) and 강사 (instructor). The character 義 (ui) is the same one used in 민주주의 (democracy) and 정의 (justice). So a lecture is literally 'explaining justice/meaning'!
دليل النطق
- Pronouncing the 'a' in 강 like the 'a' in the English word 'apple'. It should be an open 'ah' sound.
- Over-pronouncing the '의' (eui) sound. While technically correct, saying 'gang-eui' carefully can sound robotic. 'Gang-i' is much more common and natural.
- Forgetting the 'ng' sound and saying 'ga-i'.
- Pronouncing it as 'gwan-i' by confusing the spelling.
- Putting heavy English-style stress on the first syllable (GANG-ee).
مستوى الصعوبة

نصائح
Always use 듣다
Never forget that you 'listen' (듣다) to a lecture in Korean, even if it is a video. 강의를 듣다 is the golden rule.
Say 'Gang-i'
Don't stress over the '의' sound. Just say '강이' (gang-i) in normal conversation. It is standard and natural.
The Power of 인강
Knowing the abbreviation 인강 (internet lecture) will make you instantly relatable to any Korean who has gone through high school.
수업 vs 강의
When in doubt, use 수업. It is the safer, broader term. Save 강의 for university or formal training.
Formal Writing
If you are writing a formal email or document, upgrade 강의를 듣다 to 강의를 수강하다.
Course Registration Panic
If you study in Korea, learn the word 수강신청 (course registration) immediately. Your life will depend on it.
Don't use for kids
Never use 강의 to describe a kindergarten or elementary school class. It sounds ridiculous. Use 수업.
Slang Bonus
Use 꿀강 (honey lecture) to describe an easy class to your university friends. They will be impressed.
Particles Matter
Pay attention to particles. 강의가 (subject), 강의를 (object), 강의에 (location/time). They change the meaning completely.

If you watch Korean dramas, look out for the term 일타 강사 (number one star lecturer). It's a huge cultural trope.

أصل الكلمة
The word 강의 comes from Sino-Korean (Hanja). It is composed of two characters: 講 (강 - gang) meaning 'to explain', 'to discuss', or 'to lecture', and 義 (의 - ui) meaning 'meaning', 'righteousness', or 'principle'.
المعنى الأصلي: Historically, it meant 'to explain the meaning of scriptures or classical texts'. In traditional East Asian education, scholars would gather to hear a master explain the deep philosophical meanings of Confucian texts. Over time, as Western-style universities were established, the term was adopted to translate the Western concept of a 'lecture'.
Sino-Koreanالسياق الثقافي
There are no major sensitivity issues with this word. It is a standard, polite noun. However, be aware that telling an older person '나한테 강의하지 마세요' (Don't lecture me) is extremely rude and confrontational.
In English, 'lecture' can have a negative connotation (e.g., 'Don't lecture me'). While Korean has a similar metaphorical use, the primary meaning of 강의 remains highly respected and professional. English speakers might use 'class' more often, whereas Koreans specifically use 강의 for university-level or expert-led sessions.

الأسئلة الشائعة
10 أسئلةGenerally, regular high school classes are called 수업. However, if a high school student is watching an online video lesson to prepare for the university entrance exam, that is called an 인터넷 강의 (인강). So, it depends on the format, not just the age.
In Korean, the primary sensory action of receiving spoken information is emphasized. Since a lecture is primarily spoken by the professor, you 'listen' (듣다) to it. While you can use the formal word 수강하다 (to take a course), in daily conversation, 강의를 듣다 is the most natural expression.
No, it is not rude to describe their action this way. You can say '교수님이 강의를 하십니다' (The professor is giving a lecture). However, if you are talking directly to the professor, you would use honorifics. Never tell a professor '나한테 강의하지 마세요' (Don't lecture me), as that is an insulting idiom.
인강 (인터넷 강의) refers to online, pre-recorded, or live-streamed video lectures. 직강 (직접 강의 or 현장 강의) refers to attending the lecture in person at the physical location. Students often debate whether to take 인강 for convenience or 직강 for better concentration.
According to standard Korean pronunciation rules, when '의' is the second syllable (or later) in a word, it can be pronounced as '이' (i). Therefore, pronouncing it as [강이] (gang-i) is completely correct and actually sounds much more natural in everyday speech than forcing the [강의] (gang-eui) sound.
Even if you are watching it on a screen, native speakers still prefer the verb 듣다 (to listen). Saying 유튜브로 강의를 봤어요 is understandable but sounds slightly unnatural. Stick to 유튜브로 강의를 들었어요.
꿀강 is a slang term combining 꿀 (honey) and 강의 (lecture). It refers to an easy class where the professor is lenient, the workload is light, and it is easy to get a good grade (an 'easy A'). The opposite is 헬강 (hell lecture).
수강신청 (Course Registration) is the period before a university semester begins when students log online to select their 강의. It is notoriously competitive in Korea, often compared to buying tickets for a popular pop concert, because popular lectures fill up in seconds.
You use the word 휴강 (hyu-gang). You can say '오늘 강의 휴강이에요' (Today's lecture is canceled) or '교수님이 휴강하셨어요' (The professor canceled the class).
No, TED Talks are usually translated as 강연 (gang-yeon), which means a speech or public address meant to inspire. 강의 is strictly for teaching academic or technical subjects.

Summary
강의 (gang-ui) is the formal word for 'lecture'. Always pair it with 듣다 (to listen) when you are the student, even if it is a video lecture. Do not use 보다 (to watch).
- Means 'lecture' in a formal or university setting.
- Use the verb 듣다 (to listen) when taking a lecture.
- Use the verb 하다 (to do) when giving a lecture.
- Often abbreviated as 인강 for online internet lectures.
مثال
오늘 들은 역사 강의는 정말 흥미로웠습니다.
