حال کامل: For در برابر Since (اعمال در حال انجام)

وقتی از حال کامل برای کارهای ادامه دار استفاده می‌کنی، for میگه «چه مدت»، و since میگه «از کی شروع شد».

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'for' for a total duration of time and 'since' for a specific starting point in the past.

  • Use 'for' with periods of time like 'two hours' or 'five years'. Example: 'I have lived here for five years.'
  • Use 'since' with specific dates, times, or events like 'Monday' or '2010'. Example: 'I have lived here since 2010.'
  • Always use the Present Perfect (have/has + past participle) to show the action is still happening now.
Subject + have/has + Past Participle + [for + ⏱️] OR [since + 📍]

I am a student for three years.

since مثل تقویمته. یه لحظه خاص رو نشون می‌ده: ساعت ۹ شب، سه‌شنبه گذشته، یا لحظه‌ای که فهمیدی گشنته. یه اشتباه رایج اینه که بخوای از since برای مدت زمان استفاده کنی.
نمی‌تونی بگی since two hours. این مثل این می‌مونه که بخوای قدت رو با لیتر اندازه بگیری! اصلاً جور در نمیاد.
این گرامر با افعال حالتی (state verbs) عالی کار می‌کنه؛ افعالی که یه وضعیت رو توصیف می‌کنن نه یه فعالیت رو. مثل know (شناختن)، be (بودن)، have (داشتن) یا like (دوست داشتن). تو صمیمی‌ترین دوستت رو سال‌هاست که می‌شناسی، درسته؟
اینجوری نبوده که یه لحظه بشناسیش و تموم شه. این یه وضعیت مداومه.

الگوی ساخت

1
ساختن این ساختار مثل دنبال کردن یه دستور پخته. اگه یه ماده رو یادت بره، کل غذا بدمزه می‌شه. اینجوری می‌سازیمش:
2
با فاعل شروع کن (I, You, We, They, He, She, It).
3
فعل کمکی رو اضافه کن: برای اکثر فاعل‌ها از have استفاده کن، اما برای سوم شخص (He, She, It) از has استفاده کن. اینو یادت نره، وگرنه ممکنه معلم زبانت یه گوشه بشینه گریه کنه!
4
قسمت سوم فعل (Past Participle) رو اضافه کن: مثل been یا known.
5
نشانه زمان رو بیار: یا for + یه بازه زمانی (مثل for 3 days) یا since + یه نقطه زمانی (مثل since Monday).

Present Perfect: For vs. Since (Ongoing Actions) در مقابل Present Perfect vs. Past Simple

Learners use Past Simple for ongoing actions or Present Perfect for finished ones.

Present Perfect: For vs. Since (Ongoing Actions) در مقابل For vs. During

Both relate to time, but 'during' is used with nouns to say when something happened, not how long.

Present Perfect: For vs. Since (Ongoing Actions) در مقابل Since vs. From

Learners use 'from' to mark a start point with the Present Perfect.

I have been here since Monday.

In English, we use the Present Perfect, not the Present Simple, for actions starting in the past.

I have lived here since two years.

How long you have been here?

How long have you been here?

💡

مدت زمان یا نقطه شروع؟

همیشه از خودت بپرس: دارم درباره *طول زمان* صحبت می‌کنم (for) یا *لحظه‌ای* که شروع شده (since)؟ این سوال ساده بهت کمک می‌کنه کلمه درست رو انتخاب کنی. مثلاً: "I've been waiting for an hour."
⚠️

زمان‌ها رو قاطی نکن!

یادت باشه، for و since برای کارهای ادامه دار تقریباً همیشه با حال کامل (Present Perfect) یا حال کامل استمراری (Present Perfect Continuous) میان. استفاده از اونها با گذشته ساده (Past Simple) معنی جمله رو عوض می‌کنه و یعنی کار تموم شده. مثلاً:
I studied for two hours.
🎯

به 'تا الان' فکر کن

حال کامل اساساً گذشته رو به حال وصل می‌کنه. وقتی for یا since رو اضافه می‌کنی، فقط داری مشخص می‌کنی *چقدر* این ارتباط فعال بوده یا *کِی* شروع شده. همیشه درباره 'تا الان' هست. مثلاً:
She has been learning French since she was ten.
🌍

طبیعی‌تر حرف بزن

با تسلط بر for و since با حال کامل، انگلیسی‌ات خیلی روان‌تر و طبیعی‌تر به نظر می‌رسه. بومی‌ها دائماً از این گرامر برای توصیف زندگی، تجربه‌ها و موقعیت‌های فعلیشون استفاده می‌کنن. وقتی بهش گوش بدی، همه جا می‌بینیش! مثلاً: "I've lived in Tehran for five years."
💡

استثنای فعل‌های حالتی (State Verbs)

برای فعل‌های حالتی (مثل know, be, have, love, understand)، معمولاً از حال کامل ساده (Present Perfect Simple) استفاده می‌کنیم، نه حال کامل استمراری، حتی اگه کار ادامه دار باشه. مثلاً:
I have known her for years.
(نه I have been knowing her.)

Always put that verb in the Past Simple.

چالش

Write three sentences about your life: one using 'for', one using 'since' with a year, and one using 'since' with a past event (e.g., 'since I was a child').

نکات فرهنگی

British speakers are very strict about using the Present Perfect with 'for' and 'since'. Using the Past Simple instead (e.g., 'I didn't see him since Monday') sounds very incorrect to them.

While the Present Perfect is standard, in informal American speech, you might occasionally hear the Past Simple used with 'since', though it is technically non-standard.

Using 'for' and 'since' correctly is a marker of professional English proficiency. It is often tested in exams like IELTS or TOEFL because it shows a grasp of complex time relationships.

The Present Perfect evolved from Old English 'habban' (to have) + a past participle, originally meaning 'I possess a finished thing'. Over time, it shifted to describe the state resulting from that action.

Yes, but it means the action is finished. `I lived there for two years` means you don't live there now. `I have lived there for two years` means you still do.

No, 'since' is almost exclusively used with the Present Perfect (or Past Perfect) in English to show a connection to a later time.

It is always `for a long time`. 'A long time' is a duration, not a specific point.

`For` tells you how long (duration). `During` tells you when (within a named event). Example: 'I slept for two hours during the flight.'

Technically yes, but it is much more natural to say `for five years`. 'Since' is better with dates or events.

Yes, for this specific rule of duration, the Present Perfect `have/has + past participle` is required.

Yes! `Ever since` is a common way to emphasize that something has been true from a specific point until now. 'I've loved pizza ever since I was a kid.'

In negative sentences, `in` is a common and natural substitute for `for` in informal English.
