विषाक्त

vishakt

§ Don't Confuse with "Zehrila" (ज़हरीला)

Many learners, especially at the B1 level, tend to use ज़हरीला (zehrila) interchangeably with विषाक्त (vishakt). While both relate to something being harmful due to poison, there's a subtle but important distinction in common usage. विषाक्त (vishakt) often describes something that *has been made* poisonous or *contains* poison, or something that is *toxic* in a broader sense (like toxic waste). ज़हरीला (zehrila) more commonly refers to something that is *naturally* poisonous, like a venomous snake or a poisonous plant. Think of it this way: a mushroom that is naturally poisonous is ज़हरीला. Food that has gone bad and become poisonous is विषाक्त.

यह मशरूम ज़हरीला है। (This mushroom is poisonous.)

बासी खाना विषाक्त हो गया था। (The stale food had become toxic/poisonous.)

§ Using "Vishakt" for Emotional Toxicity

Just like in English, "toxic" can be used metaphorically for relationships or environments. In Hindi, विषाक्त (vishakt) can also be used in this way, but it's less common than a direct translation of "toxic environment" or "toxic relationship." You might hear it, but it's often preferred to use other phrases that describe the negative nature more directly. For example, instead of saying "विषाक्त रिश्ता" (vishakt rishta), you might say "हानिकारक रिश्ता" (hanikarak rishta - harmful relationship) or "बुरा रिश्ता" (bura rishta - bad relationship).

उसका व्यवहार बहुत विषाक्त है। (His behavior is very toxic.)

While grammatically correct, this usage might sound a bit formal or strong to a native speaker in everyday conversation. It's not a mistake in meaning, but perhaps in naturalness of expression.

§ Forgetting Gender Agreement

विषाक्त (vishakt) is an adjective, and like most Hindi adjectives, it needs to agree with the gender and number of the noun it modifies. This is a common mistake for learners. If the noun is feminine, विषाक्त (vishakt) becomes विषाक्त (vishakt) - the form often stays the same for masculine and feminine singular, but pay attention to plural forms, especially with other adjectives. For instance, if you're talking about "toxic chemicals" (रसायन - rasayan, masculine plural), it would be "विषाक्त रसायन" (vishakt rasayan). If you're talking about a "toxic substance" (पदार्थ - padarth, masculine singular), it's "विषाक्त पदार्थ" (vishakt padarth).

Remember:
विषाक्त (vishakt) generally stays the same for masculine and feminine singular nouns. The ending does not change for gender agreement, unlike some other adjectives.

However, the bigger mistake here is often in not thinking about adjectives at all. Always double-check if your adjective agrees with the noun it's describing, even if in this specific case, the form of विषाक्त (vishakt) itself doesn't change much for gender.
