追上

You usually put the person or thing you are chasing right after the phrase. For example, 我追上他了 means 'I caught up with him.' You can also use it for abstract things like technology or fashion trends. If you want to say you *can* catch up, you stick a 得 in the middle: 追得上. If it's impossible, use 追不上. It is simple, effective, and very common in daily life.

Use it when you are literally running to catch a bus or a friend on the street. It is perfect for talking about progress at work or school. If your colleagues are ahead on a project, you need to 追上 their pace. It’s also great for sports commentary. Use it whenever there is a distance—physical or metaphorical—that needs to be erased.

Don't use 追上 if you just want to 'chat' or 'hang out' with an old friend. In English, we say 'let's catch up' for coffee, but in Chinese, that is 聚聚 (jù jù). Using 追上 there would make it sound like you are literally sprinting after them in the cafe. Also, avoid it in very high-level legal documents where more formal terms for 'compliance' are used.

Chinese culture places a huge emphasis on 'keeping up' with the group. Whether it is the 'Tiger Mom' academic pressure or the rapid pace of urban development, there is a constant sense of 追. You will often hear parents telling kids to catch up to the top of the class. It reflects a society that has moved incredibly fast over the last thirty years.

You will often hear 赶上 (gǎn shàng) which is almost identical. However, 追 implies a bit more effort and 'chasing' intent. Another one is 追赶 (zhuī gǎn), which sounds a bit more like a formal pursuit. If you are talking about catching a deadline, you might use 赶上 instead, but for people, 追上 is king.
