Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use negative first conditionals to describe future consequences of NOT doing something right now.
- Use 'don't' or 'doesn't' in the 'if' part: 'If you don't hurry...'
- Use 'will' or 'won't' in the result part: '...you will be late.'
- You can replace 'if... not' with 'unless': 'Unless you hurry...'
Overview
if clause.
do + not.- Si le sujet est
I,you,we, outhey, on utilisedon't. - Si le sujet est
he,she, ouit, on utilisedoesn't.
If it doesn't rain, we'll go to the park.doesn't rain). Le résultat est positif (we'll go).If + sujet + don't / doesn't + verbe (base verbale), SUJET + will / won't + verbe (base verbale).don't ou doesn't reste à l'infinitif sans le to (la base verbale).I | don't | If I don't call you... |You | don't | If you don't finish... |He / She / It | doesn't | If she doesn't arrive... |We | don't | If we don't hurry... |They | don't | If they don't pay... |will) ou négatif (won't).If you don't study, you will fail.(Si tu n'étudies pas, tu échoueras.)If you don't study, you won't pass.(Si tu n'étudies pas, tu ne réussiras pas.)
If I don't see you, I'll call you.
I'll call you if I don't see you.
Unlessunless. Il signifie « à moins que ».unless remplace if... not.If you don't hurry, you'll be late.- devient :
Unless you hurry, you'll be late.
If you don't wear a coat, you'll get cold.(Si tu ne mets pas de manteau, tu vas attraper froid.)If we don't leave now, we'll miss the start of the movie.(Si on ne part pas maintenant, on va rater le début du film.)
If you don't practice every day, you won't improve your English.(Si tu ne pratiques pas tous les jours, tu ne progresseras pas en anglais.)If you don't ask for a raise, you won't get one.(Si tu ne demandes pas d'augmentation, tu n'en auras pas.)
If you don't send the report by 5 PM, I won't be able to review it.(Si tu n'envoies pas le rapport avant 17h, je ne pourrai pas le relire.)I won't go to the party if you don't come with me.(Je n'irai pas à la fête si tu ne viens pas avec moi.)
If the weather doesn't improve, the match will be cancelled.(Si la météo ne s'améliore pas, le match sera annulé.)If they don't lower the prices, they won't sell many products.(S'ils ne baissent pas les prix, ils ne vendront pas beaucoup de produits.)
IfIf I won't... pour parler du futur.- Faux :
If it won't rain tomorrow, we'll go out. - Juste :
If it doesn't rain tomorrow, we'll go out.
If she don't call me, I'll be sad. - Juste :
If she doesn't call me, I'll be sad.
Unless you don't study, you'll fail. - Juste :
Unless you study, you'll fail.
If I don't die, c'est bizarre (car on meurt tous un jour). On dira plutôt When I die (pour parler de son testament par exemple).First Conditional avec ses cousins. Voici un tableau pour y voir plus clair :If + Présent, Présent | Vérités générales, science | If you don't water plants, they die. |If + Présent, Will | Futur probable, situations réelles | If you don't water the plants, they'll die soon. |If + Prétérit, Would | Imaginaire, peu probable | If I didn't have to work, I would travel more.
If I don't sleep, I get a headache.(C'est une règle générale sur ma santé). - 2
If I don't sleep tonight, I'll be tired tomorrow.(C'est une prédiction pour demain matin).
can ou might à la place de will ?will exprime une certitude. Si tu es moins sûr de toi, tu peux dire : If you don't hurry, you might miss the train (Tu pourrais rater le train). C'est très naturel et cela nuance ton propos.if not et unless sont toujours interchangeables ?if... not pour des émotions négatives ou des regrets, et unless pour poser une condition stricte ou une exception.I'll be surprised if he doesn't come.(Sonne plus naturel queunless).
if « absorbe » le futur.

Start with the 'If' clause to make the warning more direct and urgent.
Use contractions like 'don't', 'doesn't', and 'won't' in speech. Full forms sound very robotic.
Mentally replace it with 'If... not' to check if the sentence makes sense.
Read the sentence aloud. If you naturally pause after the first part, you probably need a comma.

British speakers often use 'Unless' more frequently in formal correspondence than American speakers.
In casual US speech, 'If... don't' is preferred over 'Unless' for immediate threats or warnings.
Often uses 'or else' as a shortened negative condition in very informal speech.
The 'if' construction comes from Old English 'gif', used to set conditions.

FAQ (8)
No. You should only use `won't` in the result clause. The if-clause must use `don't` or `doesn't`.
Yes, `unless` often sounds slightly more formal or emphatic, especially in writing.
In casual writing, people might not notice. However, in formal writing, it is a punctuation error if the `if` clause comes first.
Yes! Use `might not` if you are less certain about the result. 'If you don't study, you might not pass.'
This is a rule in English for all time and conditional clauses (using if, when, before, after). The condition is treated as a present fact.
Usually no. `Unless` means `if not`, so `unless you don't` means `if not you don't`, which is a confusing double negative.
In some very informal dialects or songs, you might hear it, but in standard English and for exams, it is always `doesn't`.
No. The first conditional is only for possible future events. For the past, you need the third conditional.
