色の使い方 (赤、青、緑)
color と noun をセットで使いましょう。
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Colors describe nouns and usually sit right before them or after the verb 'to be'.
- Place the color before the noun: 'The red apple'.
- Place the color after 'is' or 'are': 'The sky is blue'.
- Colors never change for plural nouns: 'Two green trees', not 'greens trees'.
Overview
red(赤)、blue(青)、green(緑)の3色に焦点を当てます。a red apple と言います。この a はどこから来たのでしょうか? また、日本語の「青(あお)」が指す範囲と、英語の blue が指す範囲には、文化的な違いによる「ズレ」が存在します。- 日本語:赤い + 車
- 英語:
red+car→a red car(一台の赤い車)
a や the といった冠詞が必要になることが多いという点に注意が必要です。red は、名詞が一つでもたくさんあっても、過去の話でも、形は常に red のままです。a red apple(一つの赤いリンゴ)two red apples(二つの赤いリンゴ)
be動詞(am, is, are)を使って主語と色を結びつけます。The sky is blue.(空は青いです。)The leaves are green.(葉っぱは緑色です。)
is や are といった動詞が必要になるという点が、日本語(「は」と「です」で構成される構造)との大きな違いです。a や the を忘れないようにしましょう。a + red + pen | a red pen | 一本の赤いペン |the + blue + sea | the blue sea | その青い海 |green + tea | green tea | 緑茶(お茶は数えられないので a は不要) |Red:I have a red bag.(私は赤いバッグを持っています。)Blue:He likes blue shirts.(彼は青いシャツが好きです。)Green:We see green trees.(私たちは緑の木々を見ています。)
My car | is | red | My car is red. |Her eyes | are | blue | Her eyes are blue. |The grass | is | green | The grass is green. |a は付けません。The car is a red. とは言わないので注意しましょう。状態を説明しているだけだからです。- 「あの赤いカップを取ってください」→
Please take that red cup. - 「私のカバンは青色です」→
My bag is blue.
- 「彼は赤いネクタイをしています」→
He is wearing a red tie. - 「緑色の看板の店で会いましょう」→
Let's meet at the shop with the green sign.
- 「山がとても緑でした」→
The mountains were very green. - 「海が真っ青で綺麗でした」→
The ocean was beautiful and blue.
green と言う点です。- 「信号が赤です(止まれ)」→
The light is red. - 「信号が青(緑)になりました」→
The light turned green.
- 間違い:
I have two reds pens. - 正しい:
I have two red pens. - 理由: 英語の形容詞は、名詞がどれだけ増えても形を変えません。
redsとなるのは、色が「名詞(赤色というもの)」として使われる特殊な場合だけです。
- 間違い:
I bought red car. - 正しい:
I bought a red car. - 理由: 英語では「数えられる名詞」が単数で出てくる場合、その前に
aやtheを置くという鉄則があります。形容詞(色)があっても、そのルールは変わりません。a + [色] + [名詞]のセットで覚えましょう。
- 間違い:
The traffic light is blue. - 正しい:
The traffic light is green. - 理由: 英語ネイティブにとって、信号の色や木の葉の色は明らかに
greenです。もしblueと言ってしまうと、相手は「空のような真っ青な信号機」を想像して混乱してしまいます。
I like red. | 名詞 | 「赤という色そのもの」が好き。 |I like red cars. | 形容詞 | 「赤い車」というカテゴリーが好き。 |I like red.(名詞)と I like the red one.(形容詞+代名詞)の使い分けに注意しましょう。green's pen とは言いません。green's pen | green pen |red of shirt | red shirt |a red apple と the red apple はどう使い分けますか?a を使います。すでに話に出てきている、あるいは相手もどのリンゴか分かっている「その赤いリンゴ」なら the を使います。日本語の「ある~」と「その~」の違いに近いですね。light blue(水色)や dark green(深緑)のように、色の濃さを言いたい時はどうすればいいですか?light(明るい・薄い)や dark(暗い・濃い)を置くだけでOKです!a light blue shirt(水色のシャツ)dark green leaves(濃い緑の葉)
is は絶対に必要ですか?The car red. は文になりません。必ず The car is red. と、主語と色を is でつなぎましょう。and を使ってつなぎます。a red and blue ball(赤と青のボール)The flag is red, white, and blue.(その旗は赤、白、青です。)
red, blue, green というシンプルな言葉から始めて、少しずつ表現の幅を広げていきましょう。語順と冠詞、そして「青と緑の違い」に気をつければ、あなたの英語はぐっとネイティブに近づきます。これからも一緒に頑張りましょう(Keep it up!)Using Colors with the Verb 'To Be'
