The Agent in Complex Passive Structures
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the preposition 'от' to identify who performed the action in complex passive sentences involving modal or reporting verbs.
- Use 'от' + Noun/Pronoun to show the agent: 'Беше решено от директора.'
- In complex chains, place the agent after the participle: 'Трябва да бъде подписано от Вас.'
- Avoid agents with 'се' passives unless emphasizing a specific source: 'Казва се от мнозина...'
Meanings
In Bulgarian, when an action is expressed passively but we still want to mention who did it, we use the preposition 'от' (by/from) followed by the agent.
Standard Participial Passive
The most common way to express the agent using the 'съм' + past passive participle construction.
“Проектът е изготвен от нашите инженери.”
“Къщата е построена от дядо ми.”
Modal Passive Structures
Expressing the agent when using modal verbs like 'може' (can) or 'трябва' (must) in passive form.

Using an agent with verbs of reporting or thinking to specify the source of information.
