Stress Marks (Tonos)
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Greek, every word with more than one syllable has a 'tonos' (´) mark to show you exactly where to stress the sound.
- Words with one syllable usually don't need a tonos (e.g., 'τη').
- The tonos mark (´) sits on the vowel of the stressed syllable (e.g., 'μητέρα').
- If a word has a capital letter at the start, the tonos goes to the left of the letter (e.g., 'Έλα').
Meanings
The 'tonos' is a diacritic mark used in Modern Greek to indicate the syllable that receives the primary stress in a word.

Indicates the syllable with the highest pitch and volume.
