O Número Dual Árabe: Para Duas Coisas (-aani / -ayni)

Você tem três truques para o número dual: adicione «ـانِ» para sujeitos, «ـَيْنِ» para objetos ou depois de preposições, mas sempre remova o Nuun quando for posse. «كتابان»

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Arabic, use the suffix '-aani' or '-ayni' to turn a singular noun into exactly two items.

  • Use '-aani' (ان) for nominative case (subject/predicate). Example: 'kitaabaani' (two books).
  • Use '-ayni' (ين) for accusative/genitive cases (object/after preposition). Example: 'kitaabayn' (two books).
  • The final 'n' (nunation) drops when the dual noun is in a construct state (Idafa). Example: 'kitaaba al-walad'.
Noun + (ان/ين) = 2 of that Noun

Overview

O árabe recusa-se categoricamente a deixar que duas coisas se juntem simplesmente ao clube do plural. Se comprares dois bilhetes de cinema ou encomendares dois cafés, és legalmente obrigado a usar a forma dual (المثنى). Em português, adicionamos um 's', quer sejam dois gatos ou vinte.
O árabe exige precisão matemática. Estás agora no nível B2. Dominar o dual fará com que soes incrivelmente natural, especialmente ao pedir comida em aplicações, a falar sobre os teus pais, ou a queixar-te dos teus dois vizinhos barulhentos no WhatsApp.

How This Grammar Works

2
Identifica o teu substantivo no singular.
3
Determina o seu caso gramatical (Sujeito ou Objeto?).
4
Para o Nominativo (Sujeito), adiciona ـانِ (-aani). Exemplo: كتاب passa a كتابانِ.
5
Para o Acusativo/Genitivo, adiciona ـَيْنِ (-ayni). Exemplo: كتابَيْنِ.
6
Cuidado com o Taa Marbuuta (ة). Abre-o num Taa normal (ت) antes de adicionar o sufixo. Exemplo: سيارة passa a سيارتانِ.
7
A Regra de Idaafah: Se o teu substantivo dual for a primeira palavra de uma relação de posse (إضافة), DEVES deixar cair o ن (nuun) final.
Os dois carros do gerente
é سيارتا المدير, e nunca سيارتان المدير.

When To Use It

Usa-se sempre que mencionares exatamente duas coisas. Partes do corpo aos pares (olhos عينان, mãos يدان) estão quase sempre no dual. Em contextos informais ou dialetos, as pessoas fazem batota e usam sempre o sufixo -ayn (ـين), ignorando o caso nominativo, mas para escrita e árabe padrão, precisas de ambos.

Common Mistakes

O maior erro é esquecer de remover o nuun na Idaafah. Nunca digas كتابان الطالب. Deixa cair o nuun: كتابا الطالب. Outro erro frequente são adjetivos que não concordam. Deves dizer البنتان جميلتان (as duas raparigas bonitas). Finalmente, não confundas a pronúncia do dual ـَيْنِ (-ayni) com a do plural masculino regular ـِينَ (-eena).

Contrast With Similar Patterns

A maior sobreposição na gramática árabe é entre o Dual (ـَيْنِ) e o Plural Masculino (ـِينَ) nos casos Acusativo/Genitivo. Sem vogais, parecem idênticos (مهندسين). A diferença gramatical está nas vogais curtas.
O dual põe uma fatha (a) antes do Yaa, e uma kasra (i) no Nuun: مُهَنْدِسَيْنِ. O plural põe uma kasra antes do Yaa e uma fatha no Nuun: مُهَنْدِسِينَ.

Quick FAQ

Q

«مُعَلِّمَيْنِ» (dois professores) versus «مُعَلِّمِينَ» (muitos professores).
💡

Dica Secreta dos Dialetos

Se você estiver falando um dialeto (como o egípcio ou levantino) e ficar em dúvida, pode usar apenas o sufixo ـين (-ayn) para tudo! Muitos dialetos simplesmente eliminaram a forma ـان. «أريد شاورمتين لو سمحت.»
💬

Sempre em Pares

Partes do corpo que vêm em pares (olhos, orelhas, mãos) naturalmente usam a forma dual e são tratadas gramaticalmente como femininas! «عينان زرقاوان.»

Check if your noun is the subject or object before choosing the suffix.

رأيتُ كتابان رأيتُ كتابين

Always open the taa marbuta first.

سيارةان سيارتان

Drop the 'n' in Idafa constructs.

The dual is preserved very strictly in formal and semi-formal speech.

The dual number is a Proto-Semitic feature that has been lost in many other Semitic languages but preserved in Arabic.
