Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Bulgarian, short reflexive pronouns like 'se' or 'si' must sit right before the verb, unless the verb is at the sentence start.

  • Place 'se'/'si' immediately before the verb: 'Той се мие' (He washes himself).
  • If the verb starts the sentence, the pronoun follows: 'Мие се той' (He is washing).
  • In negative sentences, the pronoun stays before the verb: 'Той не се мие' (He is not washing).
Subject + (не) + [se/si] + Verb

Meanings

Reflexive pronouns indicate that the subject of the sentence is also the object of the action, or they function as indirect objects indicating personal interest.

1

Reflexive action

The subject performs an action on themselves.

“Тя се гледа в огледалото.”

“Ние се мием всяка сутрин.”

2

Reciprocal action

Two or more subjects perform an action on each other.

“Те се обичат много.”

“Ние се виждаме утре.”

3

Dative reflexive (si)

Indicates the action is done for one's own benefit.

“Купих си нова кола.”

“Той си мисли за нея.”
