Singing is a mandatory part of school youth festivals (Kalolsavam), which are the largest of their kind in Asia. Every child is encouraged to 'pāṭṭ pāṭuka'. Sopana Sangeetham is a form of classical music sung at the steps (sopanam) of the sanctum sanctorum. It is a ritualistic form of 'pāṭṭ pāṭuka'. Mappila Pattu are rhythmic songs sung in a mix of Malayalam and Arabic. They are a vital part of weddings and social gatherings. Margamkali Pattu are ancient songs describing the life of St. Thomas, sung while performing the Margamkali dance.
