يَوْمِيّ
§ Confusing "يَوْمِيّ" with "كُلّ يَوْم"
One of the most frequent mistakes learners make is confusing the adjective يَوْمِيّ (daily) with the phrase كُلّ يَوْم (every day). While both relate to daily occurrences, their grammatical roles are different.
- DEFINITION
- يَوْمِيّ is an adjective. It describes a noun. For example, 'daily routine' or 'daily news'.
- DEFINITION
- كُلّ يَوْم is an adverbial phrase. It tells you when an action happens. For example, 'I go to work every day'.
Think of it this way: if you're describing *what kind* of thing it is, use يَوْمِيّ. If you're describing *how often* an action occurs, use كُلّ يَوْم.
روتينه اليَوْمِيّ بسيط.
His daily routine is simple.
يذهب إلى العمل كُلّ يَوْم.
He goes to work every day.
§ Incorrect Noun-Adjective Agreement
Like all adjectives in Arabic, يَوْمِيّ must agree with the noun it describes in gender, number, and definiteness. Forgetting this can lead to grammatically incorrect sentences.
- Gender: If the noun is feminine, يَوْمِيّ becomes يَوْمِيَّة (with a tāʾ marbūṭah ة).
- Number: If the noun is plural, the adjective should also be plural. However, for non-human plurals, the feminine singular adjective is often used. This can be tricky!
- Definiteness: If the noun is definite (e.g., has الـ), the adjective must also be definite. If the noun is indefinite, the adjective must be indefinite.
أخبار يَوْمِيَّة.
Daily news (feminine noun, feminine adjective).
الجريدة اليَوْمِيَّة.
The daily newspaper (definite feminine noun, definite feminine adjective).
§ Overusing "يَوْمِيّ" for every daily action
While يَوْمِيّ means 'daily', it's not always the most natural choice for every single daily activity. Sometimes, using كُلّ يَوْم or even just the present tense of the verb is more appropriate and sounds more native.
For instance, instead of saying something like 'أنا أفعل واجباتي اليومية' (I do my daily homework), it's often more common to say 'أنا أفعل واجباتي كُلّ يَوْم' (I do my homework every day) or simply 'أفعل واجباتي' (I do my homework) if the daily aspect is implied or already understood from context.
أقرأ القرآن كُلّ يَوْم.
I read the Quran every day.
Using يَوْمِيّ sounds best when describing something that *is* inherently daily, like a daily newspaper (جريدة يَوْمِيَّة), a daily task (مهمة يَوْمِيَّة), or a daily report (تقرير يَوْمِيّ).
