In the Levant, the phrase is often used with a slightly more aggressive tone in social contexts, implying someone is 'counting your breaths' (بيعدّ أنفاسك), meaning they are overly critical or nosy. Egyptians often use 'كاتم على نَفَسي' (pressing on my breath) to describe a suffocating situation or person, which is a more intense variation of 'على أنفاسي'. In the Gulf, the idiom retains its strong connection to sports and traditional racing (camel or horse racing), where commentators use it to describe a 'nose-to-nose' finish. In North Africa, while the standard idiom is understood, people might use 'حاضيه' (watching him closely) to convey a similar sense of surveillance.
