§ Common Mistakes with 'شگفت‌زده'

§ Mistake 2: Confusing 'شگفت‌زده' with the noun 'شگفتی'

While both words come from the same root meaning 'wonder', 'شگفت‌زده' is an adjective, and 'شگفتی' (shegæfti) is a noun meaning 'wonder' or 'amazement'. You can't use them interchangeably.

Wrong Example

من شگفتی هستم. (Literally: I am wonder.)

Correct Example

این یک شگفتی بزرگ است. (This is a great wonder.)

§ Mistake 3: Overusing 'خیلی' (very)

While 'خیلی' (kheyli) means 'very' and is perfectly fine to use, 'شگفت‌زده' already carries a strong sense of surprise or amazement. Sometimes, just saying 'شگفت‌زده بودم' (I was surprised) is enough without 'خیلی'. If you want to emphasize it, other adverbs can be more expressive.

Common (but sometimes redundant) Use

من خیلی شگفت‌زده شدم. (I became very surprised.)

Consider these alternatives for stronger emphasis:

• واقعاً (vaqe'an - really/truly)

  من واقعاً شگفت‌زده بودم.
