Has Proof of Dark Matter Been Hiding on Ganymede?

Astronomers are on a scavenger hunt  that started almost 100 years ago, searching for something  right in front of their eyes.

ستاره‌شناسان در یک شکار گنج هستند که تقریباً ۱۰۰ سال پیش شروع شده و چیزی را درست جلوی چشمشان جستجو می‌کنند.

They know something’s out there, holding galaxies together and sculpting the observable universe into this awesome shape.

And they’ve given it a name: dark matter.

The only problem is…no one has  any idea what dark matter is.

It barely interacts with  anything except through gravity.

به سختی با چیزی جز از طریق گرانش تعامل می‌کند.

It’s invisible, and all attempts  to detect it directly have failed.

نامرئی است و تمام تلاش‌ها برای تشخیص مستقیم آن شکست خورده است.

But maybe… just maybe, a  giant moon orbiting Jupiter has been collecting evidence  of dark matter all along.

اما شاید... فقط شاید، یک ماه غول‌پیکر که به دور مشتری می‌چرخد، تمام این مدت شواهدی از ماده تاریک جمع‌آوری کرده باشد.

The problem with looking for dark matter is that we don’t even really know what we’re looking for.

مشکل در جستجوی ماده تاریک این است که ما حتی واقعاً نمی‌دانیم دنبال چه هستیم.

It’s like trying to go on an Easter egg  hunt if you’ve never seen an egg before.

مثل این است که بخواهید به شکار تخم‌مرغ عید بروید در حالی که هرگز تخم‌مرغ ندیده‌اید.

Also, the eggs are invisible. And impossible to touch.

همچنین، تخم‌مرغ‌ها نامرئی هستند. و لمس کردنشان غیرممکن است.

But over the past several decades,  scientists have come up with all sorts of ideas about what  dark matter might be like.

اما در طول چند دهه گذشته، دانشمندان ایده‌های مختلفی در مورد اینکه ماده تاریک چگونه می‌تواند باشد، مطرح کرده‌اند.

These days, one particularly popular hypothesis  is that it’s a bunch of tiny particles known as WIMPs that barely ever  interact with light and regular matter.

این روزها، یکی از فرضیه‌های محبوب این است که این ذرات ریز به نام WIMPها هستند که به ندرت با نور و ماده معمولی تعامل می‌کنند.

But very, very occasionally, a  WIMP could collide with an atom and release a little jolt of energy.

اما خیلی، خیلی به ندرت، یک WIMP می‌تواند با یک اتم برخورد کند و مقدار کمی انرژی آزاد کند.

Assuming they actually exist,  and this actually happens, we could detect those jolts.

So around the world, scientists have built massive underground detectors full  of heavy atoms like xenon.

But after years of searching, they’ve had no luck.
