Has Proof of Dark Matter Been Hiding on Ganymede?

Astronomers are on a scavenger hunt  that started almost 100 years ago, searching for something  right in front of their eyes.

중력을 제외하고는 거의 아무것과도 상호작용하지 않습니다.

They know something’s out there, holding galaxies together and sculpting the observable universe into this awesome shape.

보이지 않고, 직접 감지하려는 모든 시도는 실패했습니다.

And they’ve given it a name: dark matter.

하지만 어쩌면... 어쩌면 목성을 공전하는 거대한 달이 지금까지 암흑 물질의 증거를 수집해 왔을지도 모릅니다.

The only problem is…no one has  any idea what dark matter is.

It barely interacts with  anything except through gravity.

암흑 물질을 찾는 문제는 우리가 무엇을 찾고 있는지조차 제대로 모른다는 것입니다.

It’s invisible, and all attempts  to detect it directly have failed.

알을 본 적도 없는 상태에서 부활절 달걀 찾기를 가는 것과 같아요.

But maybe… just maybe, a  giant moon orbiting Jupiter has been collecting evidence  of dark matter all along.

게다가, 달걀은 보이지 않고 만질 수도 없어요.

The problem with looking for dark matter is that we don’t even really know what we’re looking for.

암흑 물질을 찾는 것의 문제는 우리가 뭘 찾고 있는지조차 제대로 모른다는 거예요.

It’s like trying to go on an Easter egg  hunt if you’ve never seen an egg before.

달걀을 본 적도 없는 사람이 달걀 찾기 놀이를 하는 것과 같아요.

Also, the eggs are invisible. And impossible to touch.

게다가 달걀은 보이지도 않고, 만질 수도 없어요.

But over the past several decades,  scientists have come up with all sorts of ideas about what  dark matter might be like.

하지만 지난 수십 년 동안 과학자들은 암흑 물질이 무엇일지 온갖 아이디어를 내놓았어요.

These days, one particularly popular hypothesis  is that it’s a bunch of tiny particles known as WIMPs that barely ever  interact with light and regular matter.

요즘 특히 인기 있는 가설 중 하나는 빛이나 일반 물질과 거의 상호작용하지 않는 WIMP라는 아주 작은 입자들의 덩어리라는 거예요.

But very, very occasionally, a  WIMP could collide with an atom and release a little jolt of energy.

하지만 아주아주 가끔 WIMP가 원자와 충돌해서 약간의 에너지를 방출할 수도 있어요.

Assuming they actually exist,  and this actually happens, we could detect those jolts.

만약 실제로 존재하고 이런 일이 실제로 일어난다면, 우리는 그 충격을 감지할 수 있을 거예요.

So around the world, scientists have built massive underground detectors full  of heavy atoms like xenon.

그래서 전 세계 과학자들은 제논 같은 무거운 원자로 가득 찬 거대한 지하 검출기를 만들었어요.

But after years of searching, they’ve had no luck.

하지만 수년간의 탐색에도 불구하고 아무런 성과가 없었어요.
