Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To ask questions in Russian, use 'Где' for location and 'Что' for objects, placing them at the start of your sentence.

  • Use 'Где' (Gde) to ask about location: Где ресторан? (Where is the restaurant?)
  • Use 'Что' (Chto) to ask about things: Что это? (What is this?)
  • Question words usually go at the beginning of the sentence for neutral emphasis.

En russe, on va à l'essentiel. Pas de « est », pas de « sont », pas de chichis. Vous n'avez besoin que de deux mots magiques : Где et Что.
Ce sont vos outils de survie pour tout, du métro de Moscou au menu d'un café branché. La grammaire russe au niveau A0 est étonnamment simple. Elle vous permet de sauter les verbes et d'aller droit au but.
Si vous pouvez pointer quelque chose et dire l'un de ces mots, vous communiquez déjà. Rappelez-vous, les Russes apprécient la franchise, alors ne soyez pas gêné d'être bref.

How This Grammar Works

En français, nous sommes obsédés par le verbe « être ». Nous disons « Où EST la pizza ? ».
Le russe ne s'embarrasse pas du « est » au présent. C'est comme si la langue était en mode économie d'énergie. Vous placez simplement le mot interrogatif au début, suivi du nom qui vous intéresse.
C'est ce qu'on appelle une structure à « copule zéro ». Pas besoin de conjugaison ni de temps complexes. Il vous suffit du nom dans sa forme de base (le Nominatif).
C'est comme écrire des SMS, mais c'est parfaitement correct grammaticalement.

Choisissez votre mot : Где (Gde) pour le lieu ou Что (Shto) pour les objets.

Astuce : Le mot это (eto) est votre meilleur ami. Il signifie « ceci » ou « c'est ». Si vous ne connaissez pas le nom de quelque chose, pointez-le et dites Что это ?.

When To Use It

Utilisez Где quand vous êtes perdu ou cherchez quelque chose de précis. C'est votre moment Google Maps. Utilisez-le pour les personnes (Где Иван ?), les lieux (Где туалет ?) ou vos AirPods égarés.
Utilisez Что quand vous tombez sur un objet mystérieux ou une icône étrange sur votre écran. Que vous vérifiiez une légende TikTok ou demandiez au serveur ce qu'est une soupe bizarre, ces mots sont essentiels. Les Russes s'attendent à ce que les débutants posent des questions, alors n'ayez pas peur.

Common Mistakes

Le plus gros piège est d'essayer d'insérer le mot « est » dans la phrase. Ne dites pas Где есть метро ?. On n'utilise presque jamais есть dans ces questions simples. Une autre erreur classique est la prononciation de Что. Ça s'écrit avec un 'Ch' (Ч), mais tout le monde le prononce 'Sh' (Ш). Ça doit sonner comme « Shto ». Enfin, n'oubliez pas l'intonation. Sans elle, Где метро ressemble à une simple affirmation.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Vous rencontrerez peut-être Куда (Kuda). Cela signifie aussi « où », mais pour un mouvement (Vers où ?). Где est pour les lieux statiques.
Au niveau A0, restez-en à Где. De plus, ne confondez pas Что (Quoi) avec Кто (Kto - Qui). Si vous montrez une personne en disant Что это ?, vous la traitez comme un objet.
Utilisez Кто это ? pour les gens.

Always pronounce 'Что' with a 'Sh' sound. Saying 'Chto' is the quickest way to out yourself as a beginner reading from a textbook.
