Habitual Actions: Used to Do (-a karta tha)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'karta tha' to describe actions you regularly did in the past but don't do anymore.

  • Use the habitual participle (verb root + ta/te/ti) + hona (tha/the/thi).
  • The participle must agree with the subject's gender and number.
  • The auxiliary 'tha' also agrees with the subject's gender and number.
Subject + Verb(root+ta/te/ti) + tha/the/thi

Overview

To express past habits in Hindi, use: verb stem + -a/-i/-e + karta/karti/karte + tha/thi/the. Example:
Main roz subah dauRa karta tha
(I used to run every morning). This is different from the simple past (main dauRa = I ran once). The pattern emphasizes repeated, habitual action.
