The Concept of Habitual Aspect

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The habitual aspect uses the -um suffix with the auxiliary verb 'to be' to describe repeated or ongoing actions.

  • Use -um suffix + present of 'linel' for present habits: 'Yes kardum em' (I read).
  • Use -um suffix + past of 'linel' for past habits: 'Yes kardum ei' (I used to read).
  • Negate by adding 'chem' or 'chei' before the participle: 'Yes chem kardum' (I am not reading).
Verb Stem + um + Auxiliary (em/ei) = Habitual Action
