I always loved the feeling of being in a forest.

For me, the forest is more valuable than gold.

My name is Claudia Vega and I work in the Peruvian Amazon.

I'm studying mercury contamination due to artisanal gold mining in Madre de Dios.

아주, 뭐랄까, 소박한 방식이에요. 사람들은 캘리포니아 골드러시 때부터 그렇게 해왔어요.

I think people are not aware that sometimes the gold that you buy maybe is poisoning the rainforest in the Amazon or other tropical areas.

그들은 수은을 사용했어요. 그래서 그 기술은 그때부터 크게 발전하지 않았어요.

About 20 percent of the gold produced in the world come from artisanal gold mining.

수은은 금을 추출하기 쉬운 방법이기 때문에 사용됩니다.

It's not that small. And when you say artisanal, it's not because it's natural.

그래서 광부들이 하는 일은, 금이 모래 형태이고, 보통 강바닥에 있어요.

It's called artisanal because they don't use fancy equipment.

그들은 수은을 넣고, 수은은 금과 결합해요. 그러면 아말감이라고 불리는 금과 수은의 혼합물이 생기고, 그 아말감을 태워요.

They have a very, like, rustic way. People have been doing that since the gold rush in California.

그러면 수은이 공기 중으로 증발해요.

They were using mercury. So the technique hasn't advanced that much since then.

그리고 금을 얻죠. 금과 섞을 때, 수은의 일부가 강으로 흘러 들어가요.

Mercury is used because it's an easy way to extract the gold.

증발하기 쉽고, 가열할 필요도 없고, 공기 중으로 날아가고, 멀리 운반될 수 있어요.

So what the miners do is, the gold is like, in the sandy form, and it's usually in the sediment of the rivers.
