My name is César Ramirez-Sarmiento. I'm based in Santiago, Chile.

I'm a protein engineer and designer. Proteins are macromolecules which are composed of amino acids.

저는 단백질 엔지니어이자 디자이너입니다. 단백질은 아미노산으로 구성된 거대 분자예요.

They are made of 20 different types of amino acids.

20가지 다른 종류의 아미노산으로 만들어져요.

They are represented by letters. So you can imagine an alphabet of amino acids, and you can imagine that these amino acids are connected to each other like beads on a string.

문자로 표현되죠. 그래서 아미노산의 알파벳을 상상할 수 있고, 이 아미노산들이 마치 구슬이 줄에 꿰어진 것처럼 서로 연결되어 있다고 상상할 수 있어요.

And so that allows for them to come together in different geometries.

그리고 그것들이 다양한 기하학적 형태로 모일 수 있게 해줘요.

And so they get a shape, they get a three-dimensional structure that allows for them to dictate their functions.

그래서 모양을 갖게 되고, 3차원 구조를 갖게 되어 기능을 결정할 수 있게 돼요.

We have many different proteins with many different shapes that actually perform different biological functions in cells.

세포에서 다양한 생물학적 기능을 수행하는 다양한 모양의 많은 단백질을 가지고 있어요.

They allow us to digest food, they allow us to transport ions for electrical signals to go through neurons.

음식을 소화하게 해주고, 신경 세포를 통해 전기 신호가 전달되도록 이온을 운반하게 해줘요.
