Everybody-do vs. Does: Qual é a diferença?

Embora a ideia seja de grupo, 'everybody' é gramaticalmente singular. Use as pílulas: is, has, does.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Words like 'everybody' feel plural but are grammatically singular, so they always take 'does' or 'verb+s'.

  • Treat 'everybody' as a single group: use 'does', not 'do'. Example: 'Everybody does their best.'
  • In questions, start with 'Does'. Example: 'Does everybody have a seat?'
  • In negatives, use 'doesn't'. Example: 'Everybody doesn't need to come.'

Overview

### Overview
### How This Grammar Works
Para entender por que usamos does em vez de do com everybody, precisamos olhar para a estrutura da subject-verb agreement (concordância sujeito-verbo). Em inglês, o verbo precisa concordar com o sujeito em número. Os pronomes indefinidos que terminam em -body, -one ou -thing são sempre singulares.
Imagine que eles são equivalentes a he, she ou it.
Em português, a gente tem a flexão verbal rica (eu, tu, ele, nós, vós, eles), mas em inglês, a conjugação é muito mais simples. No *simple present*, a única mudança real acontece na terceira pessoa do singular, onde adicionamos um -s ou -es ao verbo. Como esses pronomes indefinidos se comportam como a terceira pessoa, eles seguem a mesma regra de he ou she.
Compare:
  • He works (Ele trabalha)
  • Everybody works (Todo mundo trabalha)
Percebeu? Everybody não é eles, é um bloco único. Quando você usa everybody, você está tratando o grupo como um coletivo singular.
Isso vale para o verbo to be também. Em vez de are, usamos is. É por isso que dizemos Is everyone ready? (Todo mundo está pronto?) e nunca Are everyone ready?.
Essa regra é rígida e não muda, seja em um e-mail formal de trabalho, em uma mensagem rápida no iFood ou em um post no Instagram. A regra de ouro é: se o sujeito for um desses pronomes, o verbo deve estar na forma de terceira pessoa do singular. Isso evita que você cometa erros que denunciam o português na sua fala e te ajuda a construir frases mais limpas e precisas.
### Formation Pattern
A formação é muito consistente. Sempre que você vir um pronome indefinido como sujeito, trate-o como he/she/it. No *simple present*, você adiciona -s ou -es ao verbo principal. Se estiver usando o verbo to be, use sempre is. Se for o verbo to have, use has.
| Pronome Indefinido | Verbo (Ex: To Know) | Verbo (To Be) | Verbo (To Have) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everybody | knows | is | has |
| Someone | knows | is | has |
| Nobody | knows | is | has |
| Everything | knows | is | has |
| Each | knows | is | has |
Exemplos de aplicação:
  • Everybody wants to go to the party. (Everybody = singular, logo wants)
  • Someone is calling me. (Someone = singular, logo is)
  • Nothing has changed since last year. (Nothing = singular, logo has)
### When To Use It
Essa regra é usada em praticamente todos os contextos da vida cotidiana:
  1. 1Generalizações: Quando falamos de verdades universais. Exemplo: Everybody loves a good deal. (Todo mundo ama uma boa promoção).
  2. 2Ambiente de Trabalho: Em reuniões ou e-mails. Exemplo: Everyone has access to the shared folder. (Todos têm acesso à pasta compartilhada).
  3. 3Perguntas: Ao questionar um grupo. Exemplo: Does anybody know where the Uber is? (Alguém sabe onde está o Uber?). Note que usamos does porque o sujeito é anybody.
  4. 4Redes Sociais: Comentando fotos ou posts. Exemplo: Everything looks perfect in this photo! (Tudo parece perfeito nesta foto!).
### Common Mistakes
  1. 1Erro de Concordância Ideológica: O brasileiro tende a usar o verbo no plural porque todo mundo significa muitas pessoas.
  • *Erro*: Everybody are happy.
  • *Correção*: Everybody is happy.
  • *Por que ocorre?* Interferência do português, onde pensamos no grupo (plural) e não na palavra (singular).
  1. 1Uso de Do em vez de Does em perguntas:
  • *Erro*: Do everyone agree with the plan?
  • *Correção*: Does everyone agree with the plan?
  • *Por que ocorre?* O aluno esquece que everyone exige o auxiliar de terceira pessoa (does).
  1. 1Dupla Negativa com Nobody:
  • *Erro*: Nobody doesn't like it.
  • *Correção*: Nobody likes it.
  • *Por que ocorre?* Em português, a dupla negativa é comum e enfática. Em inglês, nobody já carrega a negação, então adicionar doesn't cria um erro lógico.
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
É importante não confundir pronomes indefinidos com substantivos plurais reais.
| Estrutura | Verbo | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Indefinite Pronoun (Everybody) | Singular | Everybody is here. |
| Plural Noun (All people) | Plural | All people are here. |
| Collective Noun (The team) | Singular/Plural | The team is/are winning. |
### Quick FAQ
  1. 1Everybody e Everyone são a mesma coisa?
Sim, são intercambiáveis. Ambos são singulares e exigem verbos na terceira pessoa.
  1. 1Posso usar they para se referir a everybody?
Sim, em contextos informais, é comum usar they para se referir a everybody em orações posteriores (ex: Everybody is here, they are waiting), mas o verbo principal deve continuar singular (is, não are).
  1. 1Por que Nothing também segue essa regra?
Porque, embora signifique nenhuma coisa, gramaticalmente ele funciona como um substantivo singular, exatamente como it.

Perguntas frequentes (8)

English grammar treats it as a single collective unit or 'every single person' individually. It's just a rule of the language, similar to how 'the team' is often singular.

Only in the imperative (giving a command) or the subjunctive. For example: 'Everybody do your best!' (Command). In normal statements, it's always 'does'.

No, they are identical in grammar. 'Everyone' is just slightly more common in formal writing.

This is incorrect in standard English. You should always use `everybody doesn't`.

Yes! 'Nobody', 'somebody', and 'anybody' all follow the same singular rule: `Nobody does`, `Somebody does`.

Song lyrics often use informal dialects or 'poetic license' where grammar rules are ignored for rhythm or style.

This is tricky! We say: `Everybody does their best, don't they?` We use a singular verb but a plural tag.

It is `Does everybody have`. After 'does', the main verb always stays in the base form.
