Finns value 'sisu' (grit) in staying fit. It's common to see people Nordic walking or skiing even in terrible weather to 'pysyä kunnossa'. In many Western cultures, 'staying in shape' is often associated with aesthetics (looking good), but in Finland, the emphasis is often more on 'toimintakyky' (ability to function). Many Finnish companies offer 'liikuntasetelit' (exercise vouchers) to help employees 'pysyä kunnossa', believing it reduces sick leave. There is a huge national focus on helping the elderly 'pysyä kunnossa' so they can live independently at home longer.
