In Nepal, it is common for the eldest person in a group to pay the entire bill. Refusing to let an elder pay can sometimes be seen as disrespectful, though a polite offer is always appreciated. Tipping (service charge) is not traditionally mandatory in small local shops, but in tourist areas and big restaurants, it is becoming standard. 'Paisa tirnu' usually refers to the bill amount only. During festivals like Dashain, money given to younger people is called 'Dakshina'. You would never use the word 'tirnu' for this; it is always 'dinu' (to give). Bargaining is common in local markets. You 'paisa tirnu' only after a price is agreed upon. Asking 'Kati paisa tirne?' is a common way to start the final payment phase.
