can یکی از پرکاربردترین و بنیادیترین افعالی است که هر زبانآموزی در همان مراحل ابتدایی با آن آشنا میشود. این فعل برای بیان توانایی (Ability)، امکان (Possibility) و یا اجازه (Permission) به کار میرود. اما زمانی که به سطح متوسط یا همان B1 میرسید، دیگر تنها دانستن معنای کلمات کافی نیست؛ بلکه باید با ظرافتهای کاربردی و تفاوتهای معنایی در ساختارهای مشابه آشنا شوید.cannot ،can't و can not است.cannot (یک کلمه واحد):can است. نکته بسیار مهمی که باید به آن توجه کنید این است که cannot به صورت یک کلمه چسبیده نوشته میشود. این یک «ترکیب بسته» (Closed Compound) است. در انگلیسی مدرن، این فرم برای نوشتههای رسمی، مقالات علمی و مکاتبات اداری انتخاب اول است.can't (فرم کوتاه شده یا Contraction):cannot است که به دلیل سرعت در گفتار، حرف o و n از آن حذف شده و جای آنها را یک آپاستروف (') گرفته است. این فرم دقیقاً معادل زمانی است که ما در فارسی به جای «نمیتوانم»، میگوییم «نمیتونم». این فرم برای مکالمات روزمره، پیامهای متنی در تلگرام یا اینستاگرام و محیطهای غیررسمی عالی است.can not (دو کلمه جداگانه):do not یا will not (که جدا نوشته میشوند)، تمایل داریم can not را هم جدا بنویسیم. اما در انگلیسی، نوشتن این دو به صورت جداگانه فقط در دو حالت مجاز است: اول برای تاکید بسیار شدید (Emphasis) و دوم زمانی که کلمه not بخشی از یک عبارت دیگر (مانند not only) باشد.can + not | cannot | نامههای اداری، مقالات، متون رسمی |can + not | can't | مکالمات روزمره، ایمیلهای دوستانه |can + not | can not | تاکید شدید یا ساختارهای گرامری خاص |- بعد از هر سه فرم، فعل اصلی همیشه به صورت ساده (Base Form) میآید. یعنی هرگز از

not متعلق به فعل can نیست، بلکه بخشی از یک عبارت بزرگتر مثل not only... but also (نه تنها... بلکه همچنین) است.- مثال:
She can not only play the piano but also compose music.(او نه تنها میتواند پیانو بنوازد، بلکه میتواند موسیقی هم بسازد.)
cannot را به صورت چسبیده بنویسید، معنای جمله به «او نمیتواند فقط پیانو بنوازد» تغییر میکند که کاملاً متفاوت است.can not به عنوان فرم رسمیdo not رسمیتر از don't است، پس can not هم رسمیتر از cannot است.- چرا این اتفاق میافتد؟ چون در ذهن ما، «نمی» و «توانم» دو بخش جدا هستند. همچنین در انگلیسی اکثر افعال کمکی منفی به صورت جدا نوشته میشوند (
