تا حالا شده زل بزنی به صفحه هنگ کرده نتفلیکس و با خودت فکر کنی که باید try to restart رو امتحان کنی یا try clearing حافظه کش رو؟ در ظاهر هر دو شبیه به هم به نظر می‌رسن، نه؟ اما در دنیای گرامر انگلیسی، این دو تا جمله در واقع دو داستان کاملاً متفاوت رو روایت می‌کنن.
انتخاب گزینه اشتباه مثل این می‌مونه که تصادفاً پست اینستاگرام سال ۲۰۱۷ اکس‌ت (دوست‌دختر یا دوست‌پسر قبلیت) رو لایک کنی؛ یه سوتی کوچیک که کلاً حس و حال قضیه رو عوض می‌کنه.
ما هر روز از کلمه try استفاده می‌کنیم. چه وقتی که داری برای بیدار شدن واسه کلاس ساعت ۸ صبح کلنجار می‌ری، چه وقتی که داری یه دستور قهوه عجیب و غریب جدید توی تیک‌تاک رو تست می‌کنی، همیشه در حال trying (امتحان کردن یا تلاش کردن) هستی. با این حال، زبان انگلیسی دو مسیر متمایز جلوی پامون می‌ذاره: infinitive (یا همون to + verb) و gerund (یا همون -ing).
اولی در مورد تلاش خالصانه و عرق ریختنه، در حالی که دومی بیشتر شبیه اینه که یه دانشمند دیوانه باشی و بخوای یه راه حل رو تست کنی.

این گرامر چطور کار می‌کنه

این بحث فقط اضافه کردن چند تا حرف به آخر کلمه نیست؛ بحث سر قصد و نیت توئه.
وقتی از try + to-infinitive استفاده می‌کنی، تمرکز روی تلاش و زحمته. داری سعی می‌کنی کاری رو انجام بدی که سخته، چالش‌برانگیزه یا حتی شاید غیرممکن باشه. این رو به عنوان نسخه «ماموریت غیرممکن» فعل در نظر بگیر.
ممکنه موفق بشی، ممکنه هم شکست بخوری، اما نکته اصلی اینه که داری براش حسابی مایه می‌ذاری.
وقتی از try + gerund استفاده می‌کنی، تمرکز روی آزمایش و امتحان کردنه. خودِ اون کار معمولاً انجام دادنش راحته. تو برای انجام فیزیکی اون فعل کلنجار نمی‌ری؛ بلکه داری انجامش می‌دی تا ببینی آیا یه مشکل دیگه رو حل می‌کنه یا نه. این نسخه «لایف هک» فعله.

مقایسه با الگوهای مشابه

فعل try تنها فعلی نیست که معنیش بسته به کلمه بعدش عوض می‌شه. شاید پسرعموهای این فعل رو بشناسی: stop (متوقف کردن)، remember (به یاد آوردن) و forget (فراموش کردن).
