Imagine being in a very quiet Taikutsuna (boring) room, and all you can hear is the 'tick-tock' sound of a clock. 'Tai' (たい) sounds like 'tie' and 'kutsu' (くつ) sounds like 'cuts'. So, 'tie-cuts' sounds like 'tick-tock'. You're so bored, you're just staring at a clock, listening to it 'tie-cuts'.

Picture a really dull, grey, and empty room. There's nothing interesting in it, and you're just sitting there, feeling the boredom. This room is so 退屈 (taikutsu) – it's boring and tedious.
