Basic use of これから
You can use これから to mean from now on or soon. It's often used when you're about to start something.
これから + Verb
It's commonly followed by a verb in the future tense or present progressive to indicate an action that will happen from this point forward. For example, これから食べます (Kore kara tabemasu) means 'I will eat from now'.
Distinguishing from 今から (ima kara)
While both mean from now, これから has a broader sense of the future in general, while 今から is more immediate, meaning 'right now' or 'immediately'.
Use in introductions
In self-introductions, you might hear これからよろしくお願いします (Kore kara yoroshiku onegaishimasu), which translates to 'I look forward to working with you from now on' or 'Please treat me well from now on'.
Asking about plans
You can use これから to ask about someone's future plans. For example, これから何をしますか? (Kore kara nani o shimasu ka?) means 'What will you do from now on?' or 'What are you doing next?'
Referring to future events
It can refer to events happening soon or in the near future. For example, これからパーティーが始まります (Kore kara paatii ga hajimarimasu) means 'The party will start soon'.
Use with time expressions
While これから itself implies a future time, you can also combine it with more specific time expressions for emphasis. However, this is less common as これから already carries the meaning of 'from now'.
Expressing anticipation
It can convey a sense of anticipation for something about to happen. For instance, これから楽しみです (Kore kara tanoshimi desu) means 'I'm looking forward to it from now on'.
Formal vs. informal
これからも (Kore kara mo) is a slightly more polite variation, often used in greetings or when expressing continued good relations. The 'も' (mo) adds a nuance of 'even from now on' or 'still from now on'.
Practice with daily routines
Try incorporating これから into your daily thoughts or conversations. For example, 'これから勉強します' (Kore kara benkyō shimasu) for 'I will study from now on'.
