The myth of Medusa

Before, her hair was a writhing nest of snakes and her eyes had the power to petrify, Medusa was a young woman who worshipped at the temple of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war.

髪が蛇のうねる巣となり、目が石化させる力を持つ前、メドゥーサは知恵と戦争の女神アテナの神殿で祈りを捧げる若い女性でした。

But all the while, as Medusa tended to Athena’s shrine, Poseidon, god of the seas and horses, was watching her.

しかし、メドゥーサがアテナの祠に仕えている間ずっと、海と馬の神ポセイドンが彼女を見つめていました。

And one night, he crept into the temple as Medusa prayed, and assaulted her.

そしてある夜、メドゥーサが祈っている神殿に忍び込み、彼女を襲いました。

Athena reacted swiftly to the desecration of her shrine.

アテナは自分の神殿の冒涜に素早く反応しました。

But instead of punishing Poseidon, she focused her wrath on Medusa.

しかし、ポセイドンを罰する代わりに、メドゥーサに怒りを向けました。

The young woman felt her body transform until she was a monstrous Gorgon, her face framed by coils of hissing snakes.

若い女性は体が変形するのを感じ、恐ろしいゴルゴンとなりました。顔はシューシューと音を立てる蛇の巻き毛に囲まれていました。

No man could freely look upon her again, for if they met her eyes, they'd instantly turn to stone.

どんな男も自由に彼女を見ることはできませんでした。目を合わせれば、即座に石に変わるからです。
