The Ergative ने in Depth: Agreement Rules in Perfective Tenses
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
When using a transitive verb in a perfective tense, the subject takes 'ne' and the verb agrees with the object.
- Add 'ne' to the subject if the verb is transitive and in a perfective tense (e.g., 'Ram ne...').
- The verb must agree with the object in gender and number, not the subject.
- If the object has 'ko', the verb stays in the masculine singular default form.
Overview
Ram ne kitab paRhi(Ram read the book - verb agrees with kitab, feminine). If the object also has ko, the verb defaults to masculine singular:
Ram ne Sita ko dekha(Ram saw Sita - default masculine). This is one of Hindi's trickiest patterns.
