In 1919, American mechanic Charles Strite invented something humanity had desired for millennia: the automatic toaster.

Various cultures had long toasted their bread over fire in a process that required constant attention and produced uneven results.

여러 문화권에서 오랫동안 불 위에서 빵을 토스트했는데, 계속 지켜봐야 하고 결과도 고르지 않은 과정이었어요.

But in 1905, toast technology evolved with the invention of a new nickel and chromium composite.

하지만 1905년, 토스트 기술은 새로운 니켈 크롬 합성물의 발명으로 진화했어요.

When an electric current ran through these filaments, they would overflow with energy and radiate heat.

전류가 이 필라멘트를 통과하면 에너지가 넘쳐 열을 방출했어요.

And since the flexible metal could be coiled to match the dimensions of a standard slice of bread, this heat could be dispersed evenly— perfectly toasting an entire slice all at once.

그리고 유연한 금속을 표준 빵 한 조각의 크기에 맞게 코일로 감을 수 있었기 때문에, 이 열을 고르게 분산시킬 수 있었어요. 빵 한 조각 전체를 한 번에 완벽하게 토스트할 수 있었죠.

The only problem left was overcooking, which Strite’s model addressed with an automatic timer that simultaneously shut off the heating element and launched finished toast skyward.

남은 유일한 문제는 과열이었는데, Strite의 모델은 가열 요소를 끄면서 동시에 완성된 토스트를 위로 쏘아 올리는 자동 타이머로 이 문제를 해결했어요.

Strite’s appliance would’ve been the best invention since sliced bread, except that sliced bread was actually invented later to accommodate toasters.

Strite의 기기는 식빵 이후 최고의 발명이었을 텐데, 식빵은 사실 토스터를 위해 나중에 발명된 거였어요.
