Many Crystals Take Millions of Years to Form, Not These

Most of the big, stunning crystals that we find   on Earth are the end result of  millions of years of formation.

우리가 지구에서 발견하는 크고 멋진 결정체 대부분은 수백만 년에 걸친 형성 과정의 최종 결과물이에요.

They grow deep in the Earth’s  crust in tectonic processes,   or on the Earth’s surface in sealed caves, in  both cases taking eons to form and be found.

지각 깊은 곳에서 판 구조 운동으로 형성되거나, 지구 표면의 밀폐된 동굴에서 형성되는데, 둘 다 형성되고 발견되기까지 수천 년이 걸려요.

But there’s one collectible crystal  that sometimes forms a lot faster.

하지만 형성 속도가 훨씬 빠른 수집 가능한 결정체가 하나 있어요.

In a windswept desert along the coast of Qatar,   gorgeous formations of desert rose are created  in a matter of decades, right beneath our feet.

카타르 해안의 바람이 많이 부는 사막에서는 수십 년 만에, 바로 우리 발밑에서 멋진 사막 장미 결정체가 만들어져요.

Desert rose crystals are common  sights in museum gift shops.

사막 장미 결정체는 박물관 기념품 가게에서 흔히 볼 수 있어요.

They’re named, somewhat uncreatively, for  their rose-like appearance and sandy texture.

장미 모양의 외관과 모래 같은 질감 때문에 다소 창의적이지 않게 이름 붙여졌어요.

What sets them apart from all of the shiny  faceted specimens on the shelf is that the   desert rose isn’t technically mineral  at all, but a combination of minerals.

선반에 있는 반짝이는 면이 있는 표본들과 차별화되는 점은 사막 장미가 기술적으로는 광물이 아니라 여러 광물의 조합이라는 거예요.

It’s made from flattened crystals of evaporite  minerals, like gypsum or barite, that have grains   of quartz peppered through them like chocolate  chips in a muffin, only a lot less tasty.

석고나 중정석과 같은 증발암 광물의 납작한 결정체로 만들어지는데, 석영 알갱이가 초콜릿 칩처럼 박혀 있어요. 훨씬 덜 맛있지만요.

Please don’t eat the desert rose. Now, normally, minerals combined together  like this would be classified as a rock,   but rocks don’t have a predetermined shape.

절대 사막 장미를 드시지 마세요. 일반적으로 이렇게 결합된 광물은 암석으로 분류되지만, 암석은 정해진 모양이 없어요.

And although the shape of that rock  formation can vary, we always find   this combo as bundles of these flattened crystals.

그리고 그 암석 형성의 모양은 다양할 수 있지만, 우리는 항상 이 조합을 납작한 결정체의 묶음으로 발견해요.

So desert rose is really  neither a mineral nor a rock.

그래서 사막 장미는 광물도 암석도 아니에요.

It’s its own unique thing, with  a unique formation process.

독특한 형성 과정을 가진, 그 자체로 고유한 것이죠.
